I shot three 7mm 168 gr ABLR's into water jugs and recovered them, all in the 5th jug.
Distance to jugs was 40 yds
Temperature was 13* F
Load was 60.0 grs RL 22 which produced a MV of 2936 fps 12' from the muzzle.

From L to R-
.501" 74.9 grs; .503" 73.5 grs; .490" 76.5 grs
DSCN05401.jpg

Additional testing will be done at longer ranges once the snow melts. I am also going to shoot a couple from my T/C Contender 7x30 Waters at a much lower velocity to simulate extreme long range expansion and penetration.

Very nice Jim. Just under 50% is pretty good I'd think. Especially up close like that.

That is pretty good performance, Jim. There appears to be a fair degree of consistency in performance from that lot, which you do want to see.

Muzzle velocity hanging around 3000 fps or so?

The bullets look real good. Good work, getting out there in the cold and testing those for us!

Guy

Way to be JD! I've got some loaded up and ready to go, I just have to get out to the range and get after it already.

Awesome Jim! Love o see the the slower speed test.

If you can run QL, I can shoot next weekend.

7x30 Waters
14" barrel (TC Contender)
150 gr ABLR
168 gr ABLR

I'm thinking IMR4895, RL 15, and Varget would be powders of interest.
I would like to get a MV of around 1800 fps.

Muzzle velocity hanging around 3000 fps or so?

The bullets look real good. Good work, getting out there in the cold and testing those for us!

Forget water jugs......

Here's the results of a 7mm 175 LRAB from an elk killed at just a little over 100 yds.

65 grains.....MV of 3,000

That obviously worked well; at least the elk would have thought so. Great picture.

Nicely done Bob!
Can you give us the details?

Dec, 2013, I was lining up on a 4pt bull for a 700 yd shot, the bull was moving and in and out of some trees when a group of cows came out of now where. I went for the meat (I love to eat elk) and shot the lead cow, she was large.

I shot her with a Rem 700 7mm Wby at just a little over 100 yds. Hit her in the thickest part of her shoulder and dumped her hard. No follow up shot needed. I found the bullet on the opposite hide.

I'm eating probably the tastiest elk I've ever had.

Awesome job on the elk, way to go Bob.

BTW, the LSS stock I bought from you a few years back is working well on my 280 AI.

Very nice. That 175 looks pretty danged good. Sounds like good penetration too

Nice!

I have a couple hundred of those I am trying in my STW. I am now waiting for sme decent weather .

Here is the simulated long range test.
168 gr ABLR loaded in a 7x30 Waters with 25.0 grs RL 15 for a MV of 1674 fps from the 14" T/C Contender. This represents what my 280 AI loaded at 2950 fps would do at around 1000 yds which is 1675 fps.
The first shot at 30 yds went through 6 jugs and was lost in the snow bank. I found the front nose of the bullet laying on the board, rather interesting.
The second shot was recovered in the 7th jug. It expanded to .449" and weighs 100.7 grs.

I think we have a winner. Looks real good to me. Pretty impressive. Be good to run one into an elk.

That does look as if it will perform adequately even at long distance. Pretty much does what it is supposed to do.
