I’ve shot a small 10 pt and a doe years ago with my contender but it was off of a solid rest where I wired up 2 poplar poles, like a bench, and had a bag rest on them. It worked great but not too portable lol. I’ve tried the shooting sticks but the wiggle drives me nuts. Maybe I just need to...
I know it will be loud, but I wear electronic muffs / hearing protection even when hunting w/ a handgun. So hopefully it will not be an issue.
Good idea about attaching the pistol to the shooting sticks, I’ll have to try that out.

Some years back J.D posted about taking a buck, in the U.P, with his 45-70 lever. At least I think he did as my memory isn’t too good these days. I thought it would be fun but not very practical for me at the time. But you guys know how it goes, sometimes you get a sliver in your finger and...
Two years ago I was sitting in my post when I nice 6 pt popped out of the wash at 200 yds. I put the crosshairs on him and squeezed the trigger, he leaped back into the wash and I saw him go down. Waited a few minutes and went to check him out. Hmmm, he wasn’t there. Had about 12” of snow on...
Since I just retired this year I have lots more time to shoot. Wiped the dust off the Thompson Contender in 7-30 Waters. Took it to the range and shot 130 gn Sierra ssp. Off the bench groups were .465 - .731 with Reloader 15. But Sierra doesn’t make those bullets anymore and I really like...
My buddy, Northwoods, loved the 160 Accubonds out of his 7m-08. He considered it great deer medicine. I have a Sako model 75 in 7m-08. Absolutely love the rifle but run BT 120’s and Accubond 140’s out of it.

I think that is a great choice for your boy. He should enjoy that rifle for all of his years...along with any others you might send his way ....:<)

Many areas of the U.P will have few deer. The DNR says hard winters, predators and declining habitat are to blame.
We have had 3 wolf attacks on dogs just across the WI border from here. People were walking their dogs "off leash" for all three. DNR says to walk them on a leash for...
My understanding is that we naturally pause between breaths and that is when I squeeze the trigger. Holding your breath will quicken your pulse I don't like to see my heart beat in my scope.
But it is a real pleasure to just take your time and put lead down range. I got kinda addicted to fishing the last couple of years, but I still love reloading and shooting.

As I get a bit older I find myself thinking about the "old days" a bit more. I find that I take more joy in the hunt and watching family take deer and no longer feel like I need to put the meat in the freeaer. I have my dad's 1950's Marlin lever 30-30 and was thinking of all the deer I took...
I have 2 of them. They are very particular about CCI Mini Mag ammo. I have not tried the higher end ammo so I don't know if it will work. Enjoy, they are fun pistols.
