I agree completely that the information in reloading manuals are a guide and should be considered as such. But, sometimes they point you in the right direction.
A friend brought over a Browning A-Bolt in 270 Winchester that he needed a non-lead bullet load for. (Being in California and all)...
You will probably get lots of responses on this.
Like you, for centerfire rifle cartridges used for big game hunting I shoot from a solid rest and shoot three shot groups. Some folks prefer 5 shots, but three tells me what I want to know in a hunting rifle.
For varmint rifles I shoot 5 shot...
Very good responses here, and I agree with the other guys.
Great gift, what a wife!
I agree that most all of the 300 magnums are the way to go. I would ,however, suggest skipping the really big ones like the 300 RUM or the 300-378 Wby. I have seem some people develop serious flinch problems...
My favorite small match primer is the Remington 7 1/2. I have great success with them in everything from the .223 Remington to a couple of 7 BR handguns I own.
My buddy on the other hand thinks the Fed 205M is the only way to go.
You may just have to play around to see what your gun likes best.
It may not be so simple as flat based vs boat tail. There could well be other factors envolved.
I am on my second 25-06 barrel that clearly prefers flat base over boat tail bullets, but for the most part it is not that simple.
The most accurate 338 caliber bullet I have ever tried is the...
Well heck, I guess I like the cartridge, I own two rifles so chambered. Both are Remington 700 limited edition rifles. I did not need either one, I own a 300 Wby Magnum.
The 300 WSM has proven to be a real performer. Besides the two I own, I have worked up loads for several others for...
Congratulations on getting a 7mm Wby Mag. That is a much overlooked cartridge.
All I shoot in mine is a max load of IMR 7828 and either a 160 Nosler Partition or a 160 Barnes TSX, depending on regulations where I am hunting. (I cannot use lead containing bullets to hunt big game in this part...
I had a Lyman electtic powered case trimmer and gave up on it for the very same reason. There was no consistancy in the length of cases that I trimmed.
How much this effects accuracy is questionable. If you are preparing hunting ammo, probably not too much to worry about. If you are...
Thanks for the input guys. Maybe I was not clear in my first post. The bolt moved back and forth in the raceway just fine, it closes fine, I just could not get it out to bore sight and clean the rifle.
I tried what Guy suggests with a pick but could not get any debris out or the lever down...
At the risk of sounding stupid, I have a pe-64 Model 70 chambered in 270 Winchester that is driving me crazy.
A friend brought me his friends rifle that he recently had a sporting goods store mount a 3x9 Leupold using the standard Leupold mounts. (One piece base, with the windage adjustment)...
For my 270WSM, my favorite loads are:
W-W case
Fed 215M primer
67 grains IMR 4350
110 grains Barnes Tipped TSX
W-W case
Fed 215M
66 grains RL 22
140 grain Nosler Partition
Work up to these from below, probably maximum in most guns.
As usual, I agree with Dr Mike, a 24 inch barrel will be plenty on a 270 WSM.
I hunted deer with mine this morning but had no luck. It is a stock Winchester Model 70 with a 24 inch barrel. My favorite loads in this gun shoot a 140 Nosler Partition at 3200 fps and a 110 grain Barnes Tipped TSX...
While I have never shot anything with them, I understand the 120 Hornady HP was an effort to make a tougher bullet for the likes of the 25-06.
My concern with them is that the darned hollow point is SO small that I would question if it would open up all the time.
I used to load some for a...
I hope you get your butt arrested. You should not let someone else shoot an animal you have a tag for. PERIOD, Grandson or not, that is illegal. You are amazing.
I went to the range today with a friend's new 300 WSM and did some testing. A couple of the maximum loads I had loaded I did not shoot as the shells one grain lighter where showing the slightest of pressure signs.
I came home and was going to pull the questionable loads (2 loads, 3 each)...
Yeah, like the others, I have the ivory from most of the elk I have killed. I have not had jewelry or anything made with them, just like to look at them. I have one great mount of a 6x6 bull from New Mexico in the living room. beautifull with the nicest ivory tips you ever saw.
The first elk...
I have been playing with .338 Win Mags for some years now. My go to powder is H 4350. I have shot RL 19 some, and it works well, but for some reason it shoots better with a standard primer, not a magnum primer.
The .338 Win Mag is so flexible that it generally shoots well with IMR 4350 , H...
Well, like Dessert Fox, I only have one Shilen and it is on a 6mm Remington. I shoots so good I cannot believe it. I am very pleased with the barrel and would not hesitate to buy another.
I will try to keep this short, but I do not know how. I thought about this a bit and the only true bullet failures I can think of were with Nosler bullets, believe it or not.
More years ago than I want to admit I shot a 7mm Rem Mag for about everything. I killed everything I pointed it at...
