No worries. It was 25 grains of H4895 on the dot.
The same rifle used 23.8g of H4895 to drive a 75g Amax 2825fps for reference.
I found the 4895 as accurate as Varget in my 223 and 223AI. Velocities were around the same too though charge weights differed a little.
Good luck and let us know...
Checked my notes and was getting 2925fps with H4895 and the 65g SGK in the 18” barrel. One of the most accurate loads I’ve shot in that rifle, but I shoot 75g bullets in it mostly now.
With a 10” or faster twist 223 (or any .224cal) you could do a lot worse than sticking with the 65g SGK for...
I’d be going for the 100g bullets and try 30 to 33g of the H4895 in 1.0 grain increments, seeing which one gave best accuracy. That will still have some punch on the business end but be easy on the shooter.
This week I trialled a light load in my 243 for work around the farm - an 87g Vmax with...
Hey Fotis, thanks for sharing this. I’ve never heard of that brand or that type of press.
What other press/es do you use and how does this one compare? I know the portability is possibly the decisive feature, but can it hang with the fixed bench presses for function?
Reason for enquiring is...
Not Varget but I loaded the 65g SGK with H4895 in an 18” Ruger American Compact. From memory I was getting around 2950fps but it could have been 3000...
I’ll check my notes for you.
G’day Gents,
For the time being I have discarded the idea of rechambering the Howa 243 and I’ve ordered a new 1-7” twist .243 barrel to go on an old Stainless Vanguard I’ve had salted away. (The Howa 243 shoots too well to mess with!)
I’m going to finish the barrel at 21 inches. Going to be a...
Thanks Scotty I saw that.
Shady, seems you’re right.
It’s still a somewhat vexing question for me. Something to experiment with going forward I guess.
Anyway the good news is I tried the bump before embarking on a maddening odyssey of trying a million different load combos. It seems to...
Who runs some upward pressure between the forend and the barrel?
Shaking down a second hand Howa Stainless in 243, with a sporter barrel. Thing would put several shots touching or near to it, then throw one or two up to an inch and a half away.
Made up a spacer near the tip of the forend...
As I alluded above, I’m not really a fan of these ladder tests, but if you shot say, three shot groups, with the same charge weight for all three shots, in ascending charge weights for each group, on different targets, THEN overlaid the targets to see if there is a pattern - wouldn’t that give...
TD284, not to seek to contradict anyone above, but why not just stick with your 42.2g load which you loaded to mag length initially? Sounds like it showed some potential.
Load up enough to shoot about 5 groups at 100y (too many variables at 200y for seeking a group-size test IMO) and...
I like them. Redding / Forster are my favourites but for the money Lee are fantastic.
As to the locking nut issue, I check my depth settings every time I load a batch so I see no issue. But that’s just me.
I’m going to discuss it with my gunsmith - at this stage I’m thinking I’ll go ahead just for the fun of it. It shouldn’t cost much and should be an interesting way to experiment with a new cartridge.
Seems like I’ll end up with about 21” of barrel length. Leaning towards the 87 Berger, 87...
As a dedicated Varmint Load I wouldn’t either, I just meant if that’s what you happened to be carrying when you saw a rabbit or fox.
I’d stick with light bullets at high speed for dedication to Varmints.
