A lot of guns have come and gone for me the last ten years but my JM GBL remains my favourite, even if I don’t shoot it that often.
I busted it out for a zero check a month ago and it put 3 x 400g Speer FNs within an inch at 125y.
With velocity right around 1775fps, I reckon I’m right for most...
G’day Steve,
You’re right it is a 1-10”
I was thinking 80-90g bullets for mid range plinking, foxes, goats and possibly the odd pig or deer.
I may well rebarrel it yet and see if someone wants a replacement 243 barrel, or just store it for a rainy day. Or perhaps I might still go ahead and...
So I’ve lucked into a Howa Stainless 243Win with a 22” sporter profile barrel in a nice trade.
I don’t need another 243. Can I get some advice on whether it is feasible to get a good gunsmith to ream and rechamber this barrel to 6BR or 6Dasher?
I know it will need the chamber end of the barrel...
I was with a bloke when he shot a scrub bull through the shoulders broadside with the 200g X Bullet out of his BLR 358W.
I’ve never seen an animal drop more quickly - like lightning hit him. As far as I could tell that bullet could still be going.
Pretty amazing on a 500kg+ animal.
Preacher, I shot quite a few goats with those 68g Hornadys. They worked quite well though not as good as the 75g version which really punch above their weight!
The 68s are about perfect in a 10-twist in my opinion.
Dwh, while you’re being so kind, would you be able to run the same cartridge 22-250AI with the 90g Berger VLD, with a COAL around 2.800”.
Can you run the ladder that tests all powders, up to say, 60k PSI?
I’m musing a new build...
Thanks if you find the time!
Bob
Yep. You can chase your tail or just settle quickly on something that actually works.
I usually try at most two powders at a small handful of different charge weights each, and if the gun doesn’t show me some promise with that bullet pretty quickly, I move on.
If it shows promise I’ll tinker a...
Smithy, a good 100g BTSP will do everything you want insofar as what you stated in the OP. The 95g NBT would more than fill the bill too.
I actually really like the Speer 100g BTSP as an all round game bullet and they are cheap too. Very accurate for me and they’ve got a healthy drag profile...
I grappled with the same dilemma with my 250 Sav AI. Great cartridge but I wanted to have a LR capability.
Eventually I sold it and grabbed a 1-7” twist 243AI barrel. I can now shoot the 110g SMK with a BC of around .610. Or as a mainstay for targets and hunting, the 105g BTHP Hornady with...
Guys has anyone had any success with the .224 70g RDF?
I’ve tested a couple of loads in my 223 AI and results have been a bit discouraging. This rifle shoots the Hdy 75g BTHP and the 55g SGK into less than 0.75moa when I’m shooting well but the RDF has been more like 1.75moa.
Rifle is a Howa...
I would but the Creedmoor rage hasn’t quite reached this country yet. There’s plenty of 6.5 Creedmoor stuff but trying to find a 22 Creedmoor reamer or even 6mm Creed and brass is difficult.
A 22-250 or 22-250 AI or even a 22 Dasher or BR are easier to come by at this stage.
