.224 75g Hornady BTHP vs 65g Sierra GK vs wet newspaper

I load (depending on lot to lot differences) between 23.7 and 24.3 grains of H4895 with that Hdy 75g HP as well as the Amax. About 2780 to 2820fps with those bullets in the 18” barrel of my RAR Compact. Sub MOA well and truly. Would be happy to try 8208 but I’d not look further than 4895.

The old “two-close-together, one-out” group syndrome.. Help!

They were a fairly generic looking set of alloy Weaver style rings. Replaced them with a set of Leupold PRWs. Good to get to the bottom of the mystery!

Load help, 70 gr RDF in a .223

I’d be trying H4895 but Varget should be close. Benchmark would be too fast to get optimal speed and load density. Please post your results!

The old “two-close-together, one-out” group syndrome.. Help!

Just got a message from my friend. The new mounts tightened the groups right up. No fliers. I guess the fact that the fliers were out to the side rather than random should have been a hint. I have learned a lot reading your responses. Some stuff was fundamental but sometimes I forget the...

The old “two-close-together, one-out” group syndrome.. Help!

Ok thanks for the thoughts and suggestions. You’ve given us some fodder. I’m also tending to think this is mechanical. We actually pulled the mounts and replaced them last evening. I have no reason to look askance upon the mounts which were on it, but they’re a common denominator. He’s going...

The old “two-close-together, one-out” group syndrome.. Help!

Ok so a mate has this Howa 1500 Varmint in 243. It has the alloy pillar Hogue stock and is floated well and truly free. He has bedded the lug but that’s it. The first three groups were at 150y over bipod. No called fliers. The bottom right group was shot at 125y again over a bipod. The...

    .243 / 6mm wet newspaper vs 90g Prvi, 105 Hdy BTHP, 107g SMK

Yeah Fotis that would be far from a bad fallback option for deer and pigs, just would be nice to have that accuracy and solid terminal performance in a more slippery package. Any word of a 6mm ABLR?

    .243 / 6mm wet newspaper vs 90g Prvi, 105 Hdy BTHP, 107g SMK

Try this Scotty... The top centre is the fast Hornady. The core fell out when I was scraping the newspaper off it but it was recovered in one piece. You can see the SMKs are the most mangled, but on average they penetrated further. The two Prvis fared pretty well. I’ve used them and the...

    .243 / 6mm wet newspaper vs 90g Prvi, 105 Hdy BTHP, 107g SMK

Point well made Mark. Hard to disagree with that. My only bugbear is that there are few / nil VLD designs that are also meant for hunting, unless you count the Berger VLD 105g Hunting bullet. I wish Nosler would produce an ABLR in the 105-110g grain range to suit fast twists. This rifle has a...

    .243 / 6mm wet newspaper vs 90g Prvi, 105 Hdy BTHP, 107g SMK

Thought I would add this. While I find the final expanded diameter of the recovered bullet interesting, I don’t think one should infer too much from it. I suspect that throughout the trajectory through the test medium, all the bullets expand wide, then bits break off. They may continue to...

    .243 / 6mm wet newspaper vs 90g Prvi, 105 Hdy BTHP, 107g SMK

Been working on this new 243 AI and have a few decent loads worked up. Have a fireforming load with the 90g Prvi soft point, the 105g Hornady BTHP has become a nice solid load and of late the 107g SMK is impressing me a lot. So like some of the other tests I’ve done I tested two of each of the...

    .243 Win. Reloader 23 and 105s.....

Ok Songdog I went through a little bit of this recently with the 105 BTHP in a 243 AI. I ended up going with a milder load using H4831SC - about 2950fps from the 21” bbl - and the fliers stopped. My barrel has a 1-7 twist but I suspect it was a harmonic at the faster speeds that the 105 BTHP...

I wonder if someone would QL a 243 Ackley load for me...?

7271, that is indeed very close! Thanks. As an aside I tested similar though with H4831SC, which is producing better accuracy for some reason. I’m using 47g of it with the 105g Hornady BTHP and 48g with the Sierra 107g SMK for 2950 and 2935 FPS respectively. The SMK seemingly produces less...
