260AI build - long or short action?

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. HTDUCK had been trying to convince me for a while to go with a long action. And after all this discussion, I've got one on order. I like the 6.5x284, one of our club members shoots one. Originally, I was going to build my daughter a 6.5x47L but after more...

260AI build - long or short action?

I'm putting together my grocery list to build my daughter a .260AI. This will be a dual purpose rifle - both for deer and long range target (steel, rocks, etc.) It's going to be on a Remington 700 action, and that's where my question starts. For the folks that have a 260AI on a short action...

    280 AI Bullet Selection

Dan, I ran a 500yd ladder test with H4831 this spring, and the node that it liked centered on 61.6gr, which was 0.4 grains under book max. I went 1.5 grains over max without pressure during the test, but 61.6 was the sweet spot for accuracy. This is my last 200yd target, sure would like to...

    The .280 AI

Thanks, fellas. Skim bedding the stock really tightened the groups. After the season, I took the Vortex off and put on a Leupold 4-14 Tactical with fine crosshairs that I've had for many years - I liked the fine crosshairs better for the long range work. But with 3 rounds left in my ladder...

    WTB: Remington 700 LH SA

Looking for a 700 Left hand, Short action. Remington or Stiller, etc. Prefer stainless, but open to blued. I know - needle in a haystack but you never know. Building my daughter a .260AI.

    280 AI Bullet Selection

I took 3 deer last year with my 280AI using 140gr ABs at 3200fps. Deer ranged from from 50 - 225 yards away. Couldn't ask for better performance.

    The .280 AI

Here's my 280AI story . . . Last summer I started my 280AI project. I picked up a good deal on a 700 in .30-06 from gunbroker and sent it to McGowen to be rebarreled. This was to be a winter project, had not figured that I would get to complete a load workup before hunting season. But she...

    280AI Load Development

Thanks for the feedback on the primers. Considering my pressure max is 63.3gr, and best group so far is at 62gr how far would you reduce the powder charge to start a workup with 215Ms? Also, I plan to test H4831SC - start low and use 215Ms as well?

    280AI Load Development

I'm certainly interested in the new 150 AB-LRs, can't wait to try them. The barrel is 1:9 twist. Thanks, -Gene

    280AI Load Development

I received my barreled action from McGowen last month, and put her together. Stainless 26" #4 contour, fluted 1:9 twist Holland's recoil lug B&C M40 stock I did my fire-forming and barrel break-in, and some abbreviated load development with 140 Accubonds and RL-22 powder. Started at 62...

    I am wanting a 280 AI!!!!!

I just built a 280AI this summer - pics on the nearby thread here. I've got $275 in the action, $600 in the 26" McGowen #4 SS barrel work and Holland's recoil lug, and $220 in the B&C M40 stock. Already had the glass, so I"m in under $1100. It can be done, and I couldn't be happier. I'm...

    My 280 Ackley build

I don't post alot over here, but many of you probably know HTDUCK. He is a good friend, hunting buddy and, in general a bad infulence. You know that little devil that sits on you shoulder and keeps the RADD stirred up? well, mine bears a striking resemblance to Howard. After he built...

    A first and a last

They stink, allright. Makes tracking alot easier, though. He didn't bleed much, so we struck out in search of blood. I got downwind, and didn't need any blood, just follow the stench. The taste was okay at first, a little bit tough, but not terribly unlike venison. Until you were...

    A first and a last

Nice auodad for sure, HT. I hope he doesn't stink up your living room as much as he stunk up our camp.  Amazing how tough those animals are - to take 3000 ft-lbs of energy and trot off without being slammed to the ground. The bullet performance was shocking. I've had...

How much case stretch or shoulder movement is normal?

Howard, I wondered how long before you chimed in. 280AI . . . quit trying to corrupt me. :P My son is wrong-handed, so I inletted and finished-out a gray laminate LH thumbhole stock from Richards Micro-Fit a couple years ago. Here she is as .25-06 :

How much case stretch or shoulder movement is normal?

Well, my Forster go & no-go gauges arrived today. The no-go chambers just as smooth as buttermilk . . . .  I thought for sure this was a waste of time, but alas - it looks like I'll be having the barrel pulled to recut the chamber or rebarrel as something else. Thanks for...

How much case stretch or shoulder movement is normal?

Go & No-Go gauges will be here in a couple of days, along with the Hornady headspace insert. I'd rather be safe than sorry. I'll pick up another box of Remingtons, pull a couple of bullets and measure everything so there is a before/after set of measurements. To be continued . . . .

How much case stretch or shoulder movement is normal?

Con, ( and Ridge_Runner and onesonek ) . . . I went back and re-read all of the comments about using a .264 expander and/or .270 brass. Still a bit confused on how this will alleviate the initial stretch. I'm intrigued, but can yall explain a bit more on the how-to and what it will do to...
