I went with a Shilen #3, 1/14 @23" in a McMillan stock. Scoped, comes in a little over 8 lbs and carries well. Shoots 225's and the 250 Part very well.
Scotty, looking good. You’ll get that hammer tightened up and under control. That thing must have a pretty good muzzle blast. I was working with the 300 and the 190 LRAB last week and had a load with RL22, I took the first shot and was like wow. Looked like the flash from the old Winchester...
Congrats on the retirement. You will find many things which will take up your time and think to yourself, how did I do it before. Good luck on future projects.
Had 27 years here.
Outstanding Doc. Thats how it should be, helping others and sharing. Thats one of the best things here, the sharing.
You are also usually one of the first to offer assistance when folks ask. Thanks for the sharing of your knowledge and experiences. I enjoy reading your posts.
Thanks guys. This took a while to get together but I'm looking forward to working with it.
Gerry thanks. I had picked up 8# of H4350 preparing as it was being built. I wish I had picked up more brass and some 130, 140's. I'll be testing the 123 CC and 125 Partitions this week.
I got the rifle back together after getting it cerakoted and redid the paint on the stock. Finally got to the range. First I shot some Federal 120 BT’s to sight in with. Then I switched to some 123 CC’s with H4350 and R15. I had a few loads on the softer side with both that shot well but now...
With the snow and ice here, I haven't been able to do any range work. I had this ready and the 300WM with test loads of the LRAB 190's waiting. I've been spending some time with the gunsmith in his shop and met someone who has been working with cerakote. After seeing some of his work, I took...
Thanks guys. That stock was lot of work but feels real good.
It has a little shine on it now, but they say as the paint cures it shoud dull down some.
Gerry, scoped as in the pic, 7lb 13 oz.
Finished painting the stock and got it together. I wanted to get a darker contrasting color but this is how it came out. Maybe down the road I’ll go over it again. I had used the new DuraCoat Aerosol. When I had ordered the paint, they only had a limited number of colors listed for the...
The Manners looks good and is worth looking at. I think that one was just coming out when I ordered my Brown.
I shoot the Amax's in my 308 which does very well with them. When I can find the 123's I'll pick up some to have on hand.
UPS messed up my shipment with the paint. It was on the truck...
Long, I went the tactical route and the B&C, not too worried about the weight. I would do it differently if I was going to hunt with it, but its good. I bought it as a beater but the darn thing shot so well, I worked it up. Most of the people who have the SPS 20" tactical say they shoot, they...
Check stocky's for some options. The Bell & Carlson 2958 or Tact Medalist #4 might be along what your looking for. H S might be another. They have a few for the SPS. They are not the lightest, but would work without spending bigger bucks. I had an SPS and replaced the stock after shooting it...
Al, it was a Brown Precision Classic blank. You can also get it pre finished. The blank takes a bit of work but finishes out pretty nice. I ordered it with the extra graphite. I just weighed it, 25 oz. including pad, ready for paint. I'm going to finish it with DuraCoat. Paint should be here...
Gerry, good job with the info on the different powders and bullets with the Whelen. I try to take note and write down as referance the info for the future. Also been looking at the 260 stuff you had done.
Very nice. Its very similar to mine. I went with a 23" 1/8 Shilen. I looked at the Manners but went with the Brown. The Manners would have saved me alot of work and is a very nice stock. I think I like the Brown better than the McMillan but don't think I would do the work on one again. I have...
Picked up the 260 last week. I had gone with a brown stock and did some prep work on it when it came in prior to dropping it off at the gunsmiths. I like the stock but it was more work than I expected. He gave me a call when he was going to do the barrel in which I went there and spent the day...
Congrats on the friends, family and rifle. Its time for you and the 338 to speak and next trip, have the 35's ready for calling. Good luck on your hunt.
