If you were building an elk rifle....

I would build a .300 RUM, use a carbon fiber barrel, and upgrade the trigger. the stock would be high end composite and the scope would either be a Zeiss 4x12 or a Swario 4x12. Load would be a 200 gr AB screaming at around 3200 fps. Oh heck, that is the exact rifle that I load for a friend...

    E-Tips

168 should not be any problem at all. In fact, the partition or ab would be fine as well. IMHO, the partition is a really hard bullet to beat, even though I shoot a lot of accubonds. Even at lower velocities, you should shoot what works well in your gun, and work on shot placement. Again...

    The Infamous Shoulder Shot Question

I try to get hunters that I guide to shoot the lungs. 4 reasons, one it kills the elk, two I get a blood trail, three I have seen a lot of elk shoulder shot and run out of the country, 4 it offers a huge kill target. In general, if you hit an elk hard in the lungs, the animal sort of freezes...

    Boresnakes - your opinion?

hey elkeater, I use them (boresnakes) all the time. In fact, I have not had any problems with fouling, in spite of some of the warnings that we have here. not sure about the builtin brushes. Most of my guns have less than 300 rounds through them. And I really like them for shotguns. hardpan

    need help with a rifle

Hi All, Just got back from Oregon, beautiful state. Anyway, one of my friends has a 257 roberts. Problem is that his son took it to the local range to sight it in and it came back damaged. Evidently, a case would not chamber, and one of the helpers jammed it into the chamber so hard that it...

    What say you?

Nice looking rifle. But for that short a distance, I would use a 45-70 open sights. I have trouble when having to snap a short shot and using a scope. And I can easily keep the group reasonable (for killing) inside of 150 without a scope. That is exactly the back up rifle that I used when...

    What zero do you use?

depends on the scope and rifle. For most of my rifles, I use a 300 yd zero. For my scopes and rifles will ballistic reticles, I use a 200 yd zero. I learned to hunt areas that require a 300 yd cross canyon shot. Hence the 300 yd zero. I also adhere to the 4inch method. Using a 300 yd...

    .300 Weatherby - 180, 190, or 200?

Hi Heath, Sound like you are doing everything right... Have you checked the scope and mounts? I broke Leupold mounts on my .300. I am not sure if 3-4 minutes is enough. Depends on the temp outside. Here, I am usually shooting in warm (60s and 70s) and have to wait around 20 minutes if I want a...

    .300 Weatherby - 180, 190, or 200?

Hi there, my .300 has been very tough to load, and I greatly prefer the .300 RUM. Having said that, which barrel do you have on the rifle? need to know the stock as well. Is it clean and are you letting it completely cool between shots? Likely, you are, but that is the first place to start...

    Looked at a Zeiss z600

Hi Jmad, I use a zeiss scope with an rz800. Love it. Shot a coon a month ago around midnight using just the moon and stars. He was on the ground about 80 yds out. As for the reticle, I have to admit that I basically use just the cross hairs. Hardpan

    what's it like?

Hi Guys, I got tired of dealing with all the issues on public land about 10 years ago, and sunk my life savings into my own land. I deal with poachers from time to time, but in general, hunting is good and I can keep the company that i wish. We do hunt it for money and I guide several times a...
