    Another 338

Here we go again! (Sounds like an 80's heavy metal song! LOL) Adding another 338 caliber rifle to the battery! Am buying a Marlin 338 MX in the 338 Marin Express. This is the wood/blued model with the 22" barrel. Have seen ammo on LGS shelves since its introduction back around 2009, but have...

    Unicorns

So what's you "Unicorn"? We all have that one special firearm that we are looking for. Some are truly rare and very difficult to find, while others are just not seen often in your neck of the woods. Is yours truly considered a unicorn in the firearms industry, or just a unicorn to you, as you...

    What's Your "Fun Gun"?

So what is your old (or new, or new to you), "fun gun"? As a kid, it was the Winchester Model 69A our grandparents got for us kids when we moved to the farm. Spent hours shooting it, and days in the field chasing ruffies and snowshoe hares. Some of my fondest memories as a kid. As an adult, it...

    Swarovski Warranty Service

Sent my Z5 3.5-18x44P w/ BRH reticle out for service recently (Jan. 26/22) as there appeared to be something inside the ocular lense, but only noticeable when shooting paper at 100 yards on a sunny day. Got it back on Mar. 15/22, with only charge being the shipping to Rhode Island. Not bad; less...

    Next Project

Just received a Winchester Model 88 today. Manufactured in 1967 in pretty decent shape. Plenty of creep in the trigger, but does break cleanly when it does break. Going to rebarrel to 250 Savage, with a 22" Benchmark barrel. Will make a great trio of 88's; a 250 Savage, a 7mm-08 and a 338 Federal!

    Double-Double!

Been a busy weekend hunting and having fun out in the field! Spent a couple of days afield with my wife and Mom. Spent Saturday in the Pink Mountain area north of Fort St John, BC, and Sunday in the south Peace area between Dawson Creek and Tumbler Ridge. Saw some pretty country, got stuck in a...

    Now for Marlin Maniacs!

And with my last post in the Camp/Truck gun thread, it has made me want to start a new thread for Marlin fans! (Marlin Maniacs just has a fun ring to it! LOL) Have always loved the Marlins...used my grandfather's Marlin 30-30 to harvest my first big game animal when I was 15; a whitetail doe...

    A little Sako Love

Finally received my new LH Sako 85 Finnlight II in 308 Win in the mail this week and dropped it off at the gunsmith today for rebarreling to the 338 Federal in a carbon fibre barrel. Took in my Optilok rings and bases too and ordered a second magazine for the rifle. Will get the bare metal on...

My next project is in progress!

After playing with 3 different rifles in 338 Federal, and deciding that I want something more in a left handed bolt action than I am finding the Tikka T3 is providing, I sold my Ruger Hawkeye All Weather and have the Tikka up for sale. I was originally planning on a lh Cooper Classic with New...

    Medium bores

Another article I found interesting the latest edition of Petersen's Hunting is on medium bores "Stuck in the Middle". The thread on Bigger Bores and Bullets has been a great conversation, that I think everyone has been enjoying, and I think this article on the medium bores and cartridges is...

Sensible Hunting with the 6.5 Creedmoor

Finally, a sensible article on the issue of hunting with the 6.5 Creedmoor! The latest edition of Petersen's Hunting magazine has a good article on hunting with the 6.5 Creedmoor by Craig Boddington. As always, he breaks it down to sensible use of this cartridge and what its true hunting...

    Comparing 338 Federal performance

While my custom Winchester Model 88 in 338 Federal is still in the shop having its feedingissue dealt with, I was able to pick up a LH Tikka T3 with a Swarrovski Z3 3-10x42 and a RH Ruger M77 Hawkeye with a Leupold Vari-X 3 3.5-10x40, in 338 Federal. Finally got around to shooting these both...

    New 9.3x62

Just in time for moose season! My new left handed Sako Model 85 Hunter in 9.3x62 is finally here! Only took 11 months to come in. Has some nice fiddleback in the finish when the light hits it right. Will get the good Dr to post pics as I do not use photobucket, after I get scope mounted. Looks...

    Fun Guns!

While we impatiently wait for spring and warmer weather to get out and hunt again, or just to do some shooting or testing of new loads for our rifles...or new rifles... Thinking back on the fun that I have had with various firearms over the past 40+ years of shooting... Which firearm has to be...

    Sensible Cartridges

Read an interesting article on-line the other day about sensible cartridges; IIRC it was a Chuck Hawkes website article written by another writer. It listed the 257 Roberts, 6.5x55, 7x57, 300 Savage, 338 Federal and 358 Win in the article. How many here have owned, shot or used these...

What is your next dream rifle?

What is your next dream rifle? Is it a new, manufactured rifle? An older, out of production rifle? Or is it a custom rifle? Myself, Been looking for a left handed Sako Model 85 in 338 Federal, or a 308 that I can rebarrel to 338 Federal. And then a Browning BLR T/D switch barrel rifle in 250...

    Understanding case efficiencies...

Just thinking about case efficiencies, and would like to understand better. Often see/hear comments about case efficiencies, and if a cartridge is efficient or not. Can someone please provide a good description of this, and how the two are determined. I.e. Is it the most performance per grain of...

    Model '94 No More...

I came across a recent article in the Sports Afield magazine on lever action rifles that stated that Winchester had announced the discontinuation of the Model 94! Guess I am glad that I have my collection of 94 Big Bores as originally introduced in the 307, 356 and 375 Winchesters. Going to...
