Ever rifle is diff. but that's just my exp. RL22 can be finicky from lot to lot. IMR7828 just gives me repatable results. I use the new 7828ssc in my .260ai, it compresses better & give me top vel. w/ exc. accuracy inder heavier bullets.
My point being that unless you are sniping deer at ultra lng range, the diff. between 0.3" groups & .75" groups is almost nonexistent under field shooting conditions. I can get match accuracy from a match bullet but am willing to give up a bit of that for better terminal perf. by using a NP for...
POP explained it pretty well. Slower powders build their pressure over a longer duration. You can often load the next slowest powder to 100%+ density, get slightly higher vel. & be operating at lower pressures.
When I start load dev. for a rifle round, I will usually pick the powder that fills...
Pop is exactly right, just not possible. I have tested NBTs myself in wetpack @ 50yds & they almost explode at impact vel. over 2800fps. Stretch out the range so the bullet impact slows to under 2600fps & they perform ok. Me, the NP is where it's at for unknown shot opportunites. They stay...
There really isn't much diff. between the two out to 400yds.
160grNP @ 2800fps:
0 @ 250yds
-17 1/2" @ 400, -6 3/4" 10mph drift = 1939ft#
150grNP @ 3000fps:
0 @ 250yds
-13 1/2" @ 400, -6 1/4" 10mph drift = 2091ft#.
Either will handle elk at that range & deer a bit farther. I love the .280.
The 7remmag or 7wbymag are fine elk rifles w/ heavier 160-175gr bullets. For a combo rifle, the 7wby will serve you well. The 300wby kicks quite a bit more but it would make a fine dedicated elk rig w/ 180-200gr bullets.
While the 160gr NAB @ 2800fps is fine for deer, I would expect & want more vel. from a 7remmag. Accuracy is the holy grail for rifles but I can get 160gr @ 2800fps from my 7#, 23"bbl. .280 & not bend anything. If I am carrying the extra weight & bbl. length of a magnum, then I want magnum vel...
I think POP is running a bit hot to get 3300fps from a 22" bbl. I would think 3100fps could be reached easily in the 20", maybe 3150fps. I like VV150 in my .260ai w/ 100grNBTs.
Your are looking realisticly at 2750fps for the 200gr-210gr & 2650fps for the 225gr form a 22" bbl. There are some guys that can squeeze more out of it but that's what I would shoot for & get from my 22 1/2" bbl. M77.
A good rule of thumb is 25fps for large bores & std. cases. Up to 50fps for overbores. It's only a guess & since you have not chronographed your own rifle, you have no idea how fast your bullets are going. Next time you are at the range & someone has a chrono, ask if you can run a shot over the...
I'm not a big fan of the BT at high vel. impacts, but if the impact vel. is below 2700fps, the BT works fine on the little goats. You will have a blast, most fun I have hunting is after antelopes in the foothills.
54.5gr of IMR4831 is a very accurate load in my .280. I like 57gr of IMR7828 a bit better as accuracy is the same w/ almost 100fps more vel. This is my backup rifle for elk.
I had little luck w/ RL19 or either 4350s in my .280. When I went to slower powders things got better. 56grIMR4831, 57grH4831sc & 58.5grIMR7828 all work well under 140-145gr bullets w/ Fed. 210M in Norma brass. I am looking right at 3000fps from my 23"bbl. w/ accuracy at or under 1moa.
I found the same problem w/ RL22 & have switched to IMR7828. It's a tiny bit slower so you'll need 1/2gr-1gr more than RL22 for the same vel. Accracy is actually better in several carts./rifles than RL22.
Well half way through a DG animal can get you killed. Solids are great for breaking an animal down by hitting bone, but even in Africa, premium softs like Partitions & Swifts, Barnes 'X' are getting the nod more & more over solids. Solids are pretty much reserved for follow up shots if needed or...
I have pretty much backed off using mag. primers for anything but the largest carts. holding more than 75gr of powder. Fed. 210M are used for just about everything from .260ai to 7mm Dakota even w/ slower powders like RL22 & IMR7828.
