Hey fellas. Its been forever since Ive been on here. Since the last time a lot has happened including a career related move to Idaho Falls, ID. I love it here.

An old friend of mine and I are rebuilding an 1895 Chilean Mauser in 7x57 for his son to use when he gets old enough for deer and elk hunting. We plan to leave the original barrel in 7x57 firmly mounted but plan to install a scope friendly safety in addition to getting it drilled and tapped and a scope friendly bolt handle to replace the original military one.

My favorite part of the build is the installation of a sporter style stock. Was thinking Richards Microfit with no grip or forend caps with American Walnut or something similar with a classic design. What do you say? Any recommendations?

It sounds a lot like the 95 I have below. It'll want a trigger. The Winchester style safety is one of the top things I'd do for a mauser that's destined to receive a scope. I bought mine the way it sits today. Win style safety, original stepped barrel (which I wish were contoured as it sets in a beautiful stock), drilled & tapped, rings, bases, scope. At some point I may get around to doing something about the trigger but I have too many other firearm related fish to fry.

It is great to catch up on what's happening. It all sounds pretty intense. However, glad you made the move and it is working out. I have no recommendations on your rebuild, but that would certainly be a fascinating rebuild, and the finished product should be great.

Thanks Doc. Its good to be back in touch. I was perusing MidwayUSA on break today at work and saw that they have several different types of bolt handles available. We have already picked out the new safety that we want but still not sure on the Bolt Handle. Any recommendations? I guess I could just have the smith buy what he thinks best but would like to have as many of the parts accumulated as I can before I get him started on the work.

Still slinging my old Model 70 in 30-06 with 165 grain Noslers for the most part though like everyone else, I have many others to choose from. :) There's just something about a Model 70...I've had this one since I was 18. First gun that I bought over the counter. Hoping to take her out for a muled deer, a cow elk, and possibly a moose here in Idaho this year. And then I will hunt Oregon for deer with my Dad and the old Savage 99E in 308 as I have yet to take a deer with it. Elk yes, hogs, and a few coyotes but no deer. Dad kept us in meat with that gun for a lot of years.

Hope the best to you Doc, wish I knew Greek so as I could appreciate your signature quote. :) I am sure it is from the New Testament. :) I only know English and Spanish.

Sorry to disappoint. A rough translation of Όποιος γίνεται πρόβατο τον τρώει ο λύκος would be, "He who becomes a sheep is eaten by the wolf." I do have a number of Koine Greek quotes I may use at some future point, however.

Richards microfit makes a nice product. Their service is awful, but your stock will be nice when you get it. I did a military mauser 98 and am working on another. I used the dual grip thumbhole as these are both heavy Hochsitz sporters, not walkin' guns. I really love the stock. Not the classic look you're going for, but if the pics work for me this should give you some idea of what their wood will look like. Semi-fancy Claro walnut with a 220 grit sand and many coats of 25%turpentine/75% boiled linseed touched up yearly with B.C. gunstock wax. Makes an attractive, weather resistant, easy to touch up low glare finish. I used the Timney "buehler style" safety that uses the existing mil. bolt shroud. Mine needed a couple file strokes to function properly. Not as nice as a Win type safety, but for the money it's plenty functional. If you are replacing the trigger, it might be easier to convert to a trigger safety.

FJF- Good to hear that things are working out for you. I have heard good things about the Mauser trigger that Boyds gunstocks sells. Was recomended to me by a Gunsmith. I havent tried to install the one I ordered and am too tight to pay a smith. The link is below. Keep us up to date on your project. CL

Very true words Doc. And a great motto especially with all the crap going on with the King and Parliament on the East Coast. ;) Er uh I mean the "President."

Anyhow, that aside, I plan to order some of the first parts this Friday from Larry and the Gang at MidwayUSA and get the ball rolling on the mechanics.
