250 grain hornady round nose.. I was surprised that this bullet only went 5 jugs, but it did get pretty wide in the front.. Weighed 144.2 for 58% retained weight. frontal area measured .654

It would certainly suffice to bring down an elk or a moose. Good expansion. Like you, I am somewhat surprised it didn't penetrate deeper.

Recently I tested several 35 whelen bullets one afternoon. Most went 7 jugs, a couple went 6... 5 was very suprising for a 250.

I have taken one bear with this bullet when Remington used to load them in their original 250 gr factory load years ago at 2400 fps, it worked well.......
 
Looks like a pretty good bullet for the Whelen. It would be a good one for bear up close I think. Should open them up pretty well.
