280 Rem with 150 grain ABLR

I worked up a load for one of my .280s. The load was built around 150 grain ABLR. The load worked reasonably well this past season, accounting for a muley (http://www.noslerreloading.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=26233) and a fine elk (http://www.noslerreloading.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=25444&hilit=150+ABLR). The load was built with 60.0 grains of VN560, producing a velocity of ~3100 fps. With the latest update from QL, I ran this data and discovered that I was quite close to what is projected. The load does not show any signs of pressure in my firearms system, though the projection is slightly over pressure. On the whole, the old method works; but it sure is nice to have the new methodology to project before I get to the range.

If I boost the pressure to 63000 psi, I'm well under pressure, however, and right in line with what I observed from the bench.

Wow Doc, I had no idea how accurate and helpful that QL program could be! Any chance you could run the numbers for a .280AI with a 24" barrel and Nosler case pushing a 168 ABLR with RL22/7828ssc to 63,000 psi? JD338 and I were scratching our heads on achievable velocity and I was wondering just how hard to push it.

Joe, the program will be more accurate still if you get an overfill case capacity measure. Fill the case to the point of a convex meniscus with deoxygenated water to get the overfill capacity, and it becomes quite precise.

Very impressive Dr! I almost pulled the trigger on a classic m70 FWT this week and if i would habe seen this i would have been pushed me over the edge.

That is smoking for a 150 and I bet you could get 3150 with zero issues.

I have gotten that velocity with the ABLR. That is 7RM velocity. The .280 is woefully underrated; it is a potent round when loaded to its potential.
 
Those are some pretty dang impressive numbers Doc.

I'm only getting 3000 with the 150 ABLR out of my 280 AI and 7828. It will put five under .5 MOA, but not nearly as fast as I was hoping for. I have had them up to 3150 with 7828, but they didn't' group well. I was playing around with RL-17 in them and having decent results, but ran out of powder. I'm thinking about trying the 168 ABLR. Figure for 50 fps less with the advantages of more weight and BC, it might be worth it.

I have had great luck with MagPro in my 280 AI in the past with the 160 AB. Might have to give it a try as well.
 
MagPro should be an excellent powder--good case fill, good velocities.

Thanks for the data on 280AI with the 150 ABLR. Man, from the looks of it I might have to invest in some Norma MRP! It looks like the go to in 280AI. I've heard it is pretty temperature stable. Anyone care to expand on this?

MRP and RL 22 are basically the same. I have had great luck with RL 22.

RL 22 made my daughter's 270 Win really shoot and I'm a big fan too, but I've heard it's a little more temp. sensitive than others out there. Because it carries so nicely, our Kimber 280AI finds itself in 90 Degree heat for antelope and single digits for 3rd season elk. I've also heard about the stability of MRP. Any info you've got regarding the two would be appreiciated.

I just bought (4) boxes of Nosler 168 ABLR for my 7mm Mag (Rem). I put my second HD5 Zeiss 3-15x42 on the 7mag and will try these long range loads and see how they match up to the scope trajectory curve to 600 years. They are not really fast from the muzzle at 2880 fps but my 7mm mag has slowed sown over the past 3-4 years and does not get to 3000 fps much anymore anyway. If I can duplicate the factory ballistics and drop, I will be happy with this load.

That's awesome Mike. It seems the ABLR's are playing out to be a little more slippery, as we were seeing with our chrono's as well. Can't wait to get back to work with them. That new update looks real good.

Let's see how quick a 7RM will run them at 60k and 63k respectively?

I've clocked them at 3150-3200... but ran into some pressure anytime I was over 3200.

Be interesting to see anyway....
