After our unsuccessful Deer/Elk hunt in CO. My son asked me to work up a good Deer/Elk load for his 30-06. His rifle is a Remington 700, not sure of the model, but it has a 20 inch barrel. In the past I had loaded 165 gr Grand Slams with IMR4350, but this time I would like to go with a little heavier higher BC bullet. I really like the looks and reviews if the Hornady 178gr ELDX, and was wondering if the QL programs lists this bullet? If so could someone run it using RL16, Hodgon Superperformance, and IMR 4350, and a burn rate chart. Pressure could be at 63k. If this bullet is not listed I think the Nosler 180gr BT would be my next choice.

RL16, Superperformance, IMR 4350.
As always thank you to those that do this.
Take care
Ed

Thanks so much Dr Mike, could you possibly run one with Hodgon Superperformance, and a burn chart also..
Results definitely look good, even with that short barrel.
Take care

Matching Maximum Pressure: 62250 psi, or 429 MPa
or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 112 %
These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

58.5 gr Hunter gives me 2845 fps and one ragged hole from a 22 1/2" barrel.

Is that with a 180 gr bullet or close?

I started working a bit with Hunter several years ago, loaded up some 30-06's, but never finished load development. I've still got some of those cartridges loaded, just looking hopefully in my direction when I go into my "gun room." Need to finish messing with those things and see how they do. Loaded 180 Nosler Partitions and 185 Berger VLD's. I'd have to get back to my notes to see what the charge weights I was trying were!

Thanks again Dr Mike.. Interesting about Superperformance, I can use the data from the Hodgon website. It looks like it is a good choice for the 06.

Guy, any pointers you have for loading this great cartridge would be appreciated. It is amazing that it gets no love these days.. It will get the job done.
Thanks again all
Take care

I've loaded a 30-06 for years and it's hard to stray too far from IMR4350 or H4350 for most bullet weights. It just seems to work.

178 ELDX

I use 59 grains Hunter with 180 Accubonds and Partitions. Magnum primers.

Here's a great resource from a guy who knows what he's doing:

Agree. The 4350's have done very well for me, for a long time in the good ol' 30-06 cartridge. That rifle sure did well for me last year.

I used the 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip (surprising to some...) on black bear, elk, mule deer and pronghorn. That load was enough H4350 to generate 2900 fps and a bit more, from my Remington's 24" barrel.

When I wanted a heavier bullet for Alaska, I tried the 200 gr Nosler Partition, over H4350 and was very impressed with the accuracy. Muzzle velocity was only a bit over 2600 fps, but that is just fine as I was intent on keeping my shots to 300 yards or less.

More velocity with the heavy bullets can be reached with H4831, or RL-22. I've used both of those powders in the past. But those long and lethal 200 gr Partitions shot so well with H4350, I had no problem settling for a mere 2600 fps.

It would be real easy though, to just load good 180 gr bullets to 2700 - 2800 fps and call it good for pretty much anything a hunter would use a 30-06 for.

Regards, Guy
