Hello all;
Picked up the new hand howitzer and mounted the scope(Marlin Classic 1895). Zeroed with factory (blue box Federals) and am ready to load for it. You all have been correct in that it is a hoot to shoot. Fun rifle and surprisingly accurate. I'll stick up some pics after running some handloads through it.
What I have: Starline brass, Nosler CT 300 BT, Speer 300 HP, Hornady 300, plenty of various primers (mainly CCI and Fed).
Anyone have some powder recommendations and load preferences? Target initially will be deer as my state has finally entered at least the 20th century and allowed straight walled "pistol cartridge" rifles. (although I haven't seen loads of 45-70 pistols :grin: )
Thanks in advance!

H4198

You can load it from Real Easy, to Real Hard.

Check Hodgdon & Nosler sites for load data.

H322 was my go too, bulk rem 405s from 1600-1900fps. Also 45/70 brass varies greatly by brand so don't mix your brass. I preferred starline brass

I used alot of H322 and H4198 and the beginning then switched to RL7 and have been entirely happy with it. I use 300-525's and it works well for all of them.

There really isn't a bad powder out there in that H322, Rl7, H4198 burn rate for the 45-70 Dewey. Any of them will work well for your uses. The 300's should work excellent for deer hunting as well. I love that 300 grain Speer. It is a beast of a bullet in the 45-70.

Thank you!
Have the RL and 4198.
May pick up some 322 and have 'em all and fool around with it.

Dewey,

H322 has been a great powder for me in the 1895 Guide 45-70. 59.0 grs with the 300 gr BST gets 2100 fps, sub MOA accuracy and hammers deer.
