A funky five point from Oregon

This year we decided to try the chesnimus unit for elk after spending the last 18 in the walla walla unit. We enjoyed our selfs but only collected one bull for the four of us. No preseason scouting hurt us. Regardless my favorite week of the year. The five point fell to a 160 grain AccuBond out of a 7mm Remington at 283 yards. Also saw two big wolves and wolf tracks everyday.

Very nice, looks like it was a decent bull.
Thank for the story & photos!!

Blessings,

Always a pleasure to read of a successful hunt. Wish we could have some fresh snow--it would sure make tracking easier right now. Though no doubt somewhat disappointing not to have taken more game, that is a fine elk you did manage to drop. Congratulations on some excellent pictures of a fine hunt.

Great bull. I'm missing hunting Oregon this year. Wyoming was a blast but I do enjoy Oregon a bunch.

Seems like the 160AB is stacking the elk this fall.

I used to hunt chesnimus quite a bit, always liked the area and scenery. Great bull, I really like the funky horns.

Spend a little time there and it's easy to see why the Nez Pierce valued the area. Talked to a biologist about the damaged antlers. He believed the bull damaged both sides simultaneously while still in velvet. Very unusual to injure both antlers at the same height, as if he was fleeing through the woods and hit a meat pole. Conceivably he could have been fending off wolfs.

Nice bull Don.
I'm glad you were successful. I do have to ask you though what that white stuff is in those pictures?
Maybe Cheyenne will past on here and confirm what it is. :)

Congratulations, I killed my first elk there out near, Cold Springs in 61. We hunted if for several years and took quite a few elk from there. Its a great area.

Bill, we camped near the cold springs road, the bull came from that nasty canyon at the end of five points creek. You know, the one you hope you don't shoot a bull in and if you do you hope he doesn't roll or slide or run down hill.

That sounds like the majority of Northeast Oregon!
