G'Day Fella's,

A few weeks ago, I got wind of a new RIMFIRE cartridge from Winchester!
Well apparently some of the details have finally been released, see below.

It's a .17 caliber rimfire cartridge, that propels a 20grn bullet at 3000fps and a 25grn bullet at 2600fps!
Thats getting along for a rimfire cartridge!!!
I can only assume it is based on a new larger size case, when compared to the conventional .22WMR and .17HMR Rimfire cartridges?
I imagine, it is Winchesters attempt to compete with Hornady's .17-Hornet (centerfire) cartridge???

It will be interesting to see which rifles (etc) Winchester & Browning, will chamber this new cartridge in!
The reason I say this is, I assume it is to big to fit in a lot of existing Rimfire Rifle actions?
Is there a New rifle/action to suit???

As you can see, there's lots of assumptions and guessing going on from me!!!

I'm sure, time will reveal more.

Doh!

Some might opt for the extra 500 fps.

Me? I sold all my rimfire mags and bought a 17 Hornet.

G'Day Fella's,

FOTIS, (Man, I'll have to ask you what that stands for some time!)Thanks for chasing those You Tube links up, and posting them on here!!!
It looks to be an interesting option!
Like you say FOTIS, hard to beat the .17 Hornet!!!
The big decider in Oz, will be the price W charge for a box of 50!!!

Doh!

Fotis is my christian name (Greek orthodox) means the enlightened one.

My parents had a sense of humor without even knowing it.

Everything about this round seems to be pretty darned good. A LOT more velocity in similar weight bullets plus the option of going substantially heavier, in relative terms of course. Like Homer points out, cost may be the deciding factor. I only stock up on HMR ammo when it's on sale or offering rebates. If it got any more expensive, I'd likely pull a Fotis and retire the rifle and opt for a centerfire that I can reload.

Sorry if I missed it, but what rifle are they clambering this in?
Dewey

Not sure Dewey. I'd suspect Winchester will have have some offerings, but they don't seem to have a commanding presence in the rimfire market. I'm kinda curious myself.

G'Day Fella's,

FOTIS, Thank You for the explanation!
And I have to agree with the meaning of you name!!!

There are a lot of great Australians that have Greek heritage!
I know a lot of the locals and they are all Shooters and or Hunters and a really great bunch of blokes!!!
I firmly believe, both the Greek and Australian peoples basic mindset, is one and the same!
That's why we all get on so well, with each other!!!

Doh!

This just might be an option for night time coyote hunting.

Got lots of friends and family in Brisbane.

JD,
I had the same thought.
May be just right at night w that 25 gr pill.

Robert,
Probably won't, but it would be cool if they stuck it in a 94 style lever just for fun.

Looking forward to seeing the action that Winchester brings out for this cartridge. Sounds like Savage will be the first one's out with a rifle chambered for it.

Guess I'd rather grab the little Vixen in .222, have better ballistics and known accuracy.
Cheers

Here in MI, predator hunting at night is restricted to shotguns with "T" shot size or smaller or rim fires.
This has perked my interest.

You always gotta rub that little Vixen in our noses huh!!!!! Jeeze, not all of us can stumble upon deals like that!

Jim, I am with you, growing up, we had to use a shotgun or rimfire for predators too. We always made a 22 magnum work. That little 17 might be pretty awesome though.

Down here, I think the son's 243 is going to get some use.

Scotty,

Can you use a CF at night in VA?
I wish I could here. Snow and moon light would make for some fantastic night time hunting.

I used to shoot a lot of .22 WMR but when it got to $13-15 per 50 rounds I went back to the .223 and .204 for my varmint shooting. I could however see where this round would appeal to the non-reloader.
