I have a .284 on the build right now, and a 7X57 coming in (whenever it gets here). I've done a dangerous thing today, however. I noticed that Forster is making 8X68S dies. Sooooo, I order a set. I suspect that will be in the works before very long. I'll have to see about beginning to look for some RWS brass. I know, it duplicates my 325WSM, but it just seems "kool" to have something a tad different from the usual. I can't see the dies lying contentedly on my shelves for very long unless they manage to get used.

I really like your philosophy on the different calibers Dr. Do you have a donor rifle ready to go or will it need to acquired as well?

I am looking forward to seeing the progress.

Wow! I knew it wouldn't take long. You sounded pretty strong a few times about it. Man. That is one cool cat Mike. I love that big case alot. Very sleek. Can't wait to see this unfold!

Sweet Doc. I have never been able to own 2 rifles that match each other so much.....
My conscious will not let me. :p

I'll have to find a donor; it may mean picking up a new Model 70. Worse things could happen, I suppose. I'm still looking for a donor for my .284 Win. Actually, that is the primary hold-up at this moment. I have stock and barrel; I just need the action.

Scotty, the availability of the Forster Ultramicrometer seating die pushed me over the line.

Fotis, I'm holding so many rifles that are ballistic twins that I should be ashamed (.284 Win, .280 Rem., 7X57, 7RM...).

Very cool Dr. Mike! That case has a .512 head diameter correct? If my memory serves me, it's not the same head diameter that most magnums have of about 0.532.

You are correct; there will need to be a bit of corrective smithing to get what I want. However, it shouldn't be overly difficult.

Man all the components alone (brass mostly) would drive me nuts.

Very interesting build. I have no doubt it will function admirably as a long-range round.

Those are my favorites as well. Love the Forster dies.

What does the smith do, start with a standard action or magnum and machine it?

DrMike, I have never owned two rifles of the same caliber for long either. An 8x68mm Brenneke would be a cool rifle to have. It probably is more like your 9.3x64 as far as shooting goes. I think that the .325 WSM gets left in the dust with the Brenneke. Plus, no belt! That would be my most desirable trait. That is what I like about the 9.3x74R, no belt!

The 8X64 Brenneke and the 8X68S are different cartridges, Charlie. The 8X68S produces somewhat more velocity.

My fault, I somehow mentally superimposed that all wrong. Somehow, I thought that you were getting the Brenneke, my mistake! The 8x68S (RWS) is most certainly a different proposition altogether. It should be a banger with 200 gr bullets at 2900+ fps! That caliber is being rediscovered now, a hundred years later (1905) and with .318 bullets available, you should have a moose killer extraordinaire.

Seeing your post made me think of this. I Stumbled upon it the other day.

http://www.bullnettlenews.com/forum/yaf ... Build.aspx

The only thing that is cool about that (and not to me personally) is no one else has one....... Other than that it has been done over and over again.
Waste of funds.

YMMV

The thing I liked about it was it should match the .300 Win. Mag performance without a belt. I don't care for belts at all. But, the reforming of brass, modifications to the bolt, custom dies, etc. make it worthless to me. I don't want to do any more work than I have to when reloading. The closest thing to a wildcat I've owned is a .338 Edge I bought off a guy in Utah. I sold that rifle after a I spent about a grand in bullets, powder, and gun smithing and still not getting it to shoot to my standards. Besides, with the performance I'm getting from my .300 and the 210 and 215 Berger, I cannot justify investing in a Lapua or Edge.

I can't wait to see what becomes of Mikes rifle though. Mike, I think after such a long, cold winter of not shooting much, you deserve a new rifle to welcome the spring with, and should put an order in with your gunsmith ASAP to get one built! :p Don't forget pictures either! 8)

I have a niggling suspicion that this will be a build beginning this spring.

Sometimes a smith will over cut a Remington and sleeve it back down. If your doing that then the bolt face size doesn't matter. With a Winnie and CRF you'd have to start small (30-06/308/270) and open it up.

Good choice dr mike, i opted for a 284 winchester on my latest build. Should be done this week or next i will post some pics, nithing real fancy just a back up match rifle.

Jeff,

I like orphans that get scant respect. Some of them are noted for their "kick butt" ability; they just had a bad start in life. The .284 is one such cartridge. Overshadowed by the .270 and .280 and chambered in the Model 100 and the Model 88, it didn't really have much of a chance at the start.
