Crazy Idea or Cool?

I've really been wanting a .358 Win on a bolt action platform. I love the look and feel of a Winchester FWT. Thinking of picking up a donor short action either M70 or Montana 1999 action, and have install CM 1:12 FWT profile barrel that finishes at 22" with a muzzle diameter of .600 or .625 whatever I can get away with for the lightest barrel. Then drop it in a FWT McWoody or find a nice factory take off wood and open up the barrel channel.

Does that sound like a plan?

Go for it! I've thought about the same thing. If my Hawkeye weren't shooting so well, it would have already been done. I have a long-action Featherweight stock that is finally receiving some attention. However, it would not take much to get a short-action stock. I think it would be cool as all get out!

Yeah, that sounds like an awesome rifle to me. The 358 Win on a Model 70 would be pretty awesome. Getting an original Featherweight is way above my paygrade, but a built rifle wouldn't be too terribly more than a good factory built gun.

No lack of 358 data and man, they are nice carrying rifles as well. Good luck, hope you build it.

Sounds like a terrific plan!
A big stick in a small package.

Thanks, I just like the contour of the FWT barrel a lot. I just want the short shank and the quick taper of the FWT barrel. If I could find a .308 Classic FWT and it was safe to rebore I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Problem is right now it is just a dream as I'm waiting on my M70 .338-06 to be built. Until that rifle is finished I probably shouldn't be funding any new projects. ;) This one will just go to pending status until I can fund it.

Have to agree with Scott's way above pay grade on a pre-65 .358 Win!

I might have done that if I wouldn't have found a Hawkeye in .358. The Featherweight is much more desirable, but also much more money than what I have in mine.

Yeah, I missed out on the Hawkeye's. I hesitated a time or two too many and missed out on some great deals. However, I've been handling a few Hawkeye's lately as well as some M70's in short actions and I prefer the M70 far more. If I'm going to rebarrel, might as well go with what I like even if it is a few dollars more.

Sounds like a great idea to me. And you know it will shoot great!

Sounds great!

For some extra information. I built mine on a 700 short action with a Shilen #3 (mag tapper) barrel at 20.5". It balances perfect due to the large 358 bore which removed a lot of metal so its not heavy. With a Shilen #2 contour (std tapper) I think its would be as thin a barrel as you could go with 35 cal.

Just me but I think 21" is perfect for the 358win and a inch more of less either for extra velcity or shortter package which ever fits your needs.

Mine was a 700 Classic and I used the same classic stock inletted, free floated, and pillbedded and it looks sweet. Hope you find a classic wood stock for your model 70 because I love the classic look the best. not that I hav'en been wanting a custom rem model 7 ss in 35rem with a b&C stock "just cuss"

DrMike, if you can get a ten shot group out of that rifle without fliers. I would really like to hear about it. I guess that soma tricked out some Featherwieght rifles in some calibers will shoot and group well. Anyhow, I am curious about this.

Charlie, with the barrel profile I used on my 338 Federal, I likely won't take time to shoot a ten-shot group. It would take too long with that whippy barrel to ensure that heat was not a problem. It will shoot three shot groups very nicely, however. I may get around to looking at an extended range session with it next spring.

Sounds great to me!! Be a darn good mountain rifle for timber elk, and still have some reach. As for barrel length, a couple inces one way or the other won't affect performance or weight much in that round contour. Handling and balance may be affected more so. Then that become more a personal want, fit, and feel issue.

I always can cut a barrel back to improve balance, but it is hard to add to the muzzle to get the balance to move forward if I start with too short of a barrel.
