Finally! A Day I Was Able to Pull the Trigger!

I finally had a decent day at the range. The wind died down (I think we arrange to send it south. How's the wind in Cheyenne, Fotis?) The temperature mid-morning was -0.5 C, and it warmed to 13 C by mid-afternoon. There was no wind. I took several rifles to the range. I had a 22-250 AI to shoot for load development, my "renewed" 35 Whelen, my 375 Winchester, my 6.5 Creedmoor and my newer 280 Remington (Remington Ltd.). I got some decent data to analyze. I'll try to give a more complete report by tomorrow. For now, it is sufficient to say that most of the rifles shot very well.

The 280 continues to perform very well. Here is a sample of the accuracy potential with 150 grain Sciroccos. The groups ran together. The bottom group was a minimum charge. The next charge was spread out over ~1.25 inches. Then, at maximum charge, it came together to give a nice, tight cloverleaf. Unfortunately, that cloverleaf appeared almost atop the previous group. I have a couple of pretty good loads for which I'll post some pictures later. One is shooting 139 grain GMX bullets at 3003 fps and giving tight groups. The other is shooting 140 grain E-Tip bullets at 2950 fps with good accuracy. My initial work with 140 grain PTs and SuperFormance was mixed. The accuracy wasn't there, but the velocity was approximately 3000 + fps and the SD was very low.

I've really wanted to make the 35 Whelen sing, and a new tube and pillar bedding may have worked. The rifle yielded no group larger than ~1.25 inches, and there were several that were sub-MOA. I think it will work out. This is what it is doing with the 250 grain PT. Loads built around 225 grain Swift A-Frames were only slightly larger, with velocities up to 2650, so things are coming together.

I had several groups built around 225 grain TSX that were very encouraging. The four-shot group at maximum charge of W748 was nice and tight.

The Creedmoor still needs a little work, though all the groups today were MOA or better. Ballistics data was very good. I believe that playing with seating depth will bring this rifle around and into the category of shooter. The 375 Win shot its first set of handloads built around 200 grain Sierra FN bullets. They were "minute of moose," which isn't bad. They are about 1.5 inch groups with decent velocity.

In all, a rather satisfying day.

The 280 never cease to amazed me. I just think it's just a perfect caliber for the 06 size case.

DrMike, what powder where you using on that Scirocco load?. I tried that bullet once on Franks 300 Weatherby (180 grain) and it's very accurate.

That Whelen is ready.

The Whelen will only get better as the barrel is seasoned. It does show potential. I don't believe it will kill bear any deader than it would have with 1.25 to 1.5 inch groups, but the confidence factor is worth something.

Rommel, I was using H4831 with the Scirocco. I ignited the lot with R9.5 primers. It does shoot well.

I still think the Scirocco is a tad better than the AccuBond just as the Swift A Frame to the Partition.

DrMike, Did you notice any difference between the old Scirocco when compared with the new II series.

Man good shooting Mike. That 280 is a tack driver and that Whelen looks like it's gonna be special!

Great shooting Mike, all of those guns are going to be shooters. Those Scirocco's are great bullets too, I prefer them to the Accubonds in the 264 WM. Love those large caliber Accubonds though :) Glad to see your Whelen doing well.

Thank you, gentlemen. Sciroccos have saved my bacon on several occasions. The slightly longer bearing surface has turned some non-shooters into tack drivers. I hadn't planned on using them in this 280, but I just happened to have quite a few left over from a long-forgotten project, so I tried them.

The faster twist barrel has definitely helped the Whelen, though I don't suppose that the pillar bedding hurt anything. I told the gunsmiths that it was working pretty well, and Travis smilingly told me that it was all due to his bedding job. He modestly mentioned that he is really good at what he does. I asked if it hurt to reach his arm that far back. Seriously, though, the work they performed has turned this rifle into a keeper. I think Dan (Sask Boy) will be happy when he finally gets his Whelen.

Rommel, I never really had much trouble getting the old Sciroccos to shoot for me, and the Scirocco IIs don't shoot any more poorly or any better as far as I can tell. I will say that the A-Frame is certainly a robust bullet. For big game, I do like them a lot. It doesn't hurt that they are made in my natal state. That does make them a sentimental favourite for me.

Nice. Glad to see the new tubes are working out. Just yesterday I was thinking of using Pac Nor for a job.

For the record, those Creedmore groups look like "shooter" groups to me, though I'm sure you'll improve them. How warm does it need to be in British Columbia for you to get out?

Great shooting Mike. Looks like your getting some good results with the 250 PT's as well.. You have a bunch of great shooters..

Thanks, Scotty. I'm slowly getting there.

Joel, I quit shooting when it is below -15C as all my solvents freeze. It really isn't too cold to shoot, it is just that I can't clean the rifles properly at the bench. I've shot in weather as low as -45 C, but I don't do that anymore. I'm turning into a wuss in my old age. Though I don't particularly enjoy doing so, I shoot when the wind is blowing. I try to dope the wind, and usually I can get a pretty good idea of capabilities of a rifle and load.

Great groups Mike, anyone should be happy with groups like those.!!!!
Like you I am no longer a fan of cold. Temps in the teens are OK. Temps in the single digits annoy me greatly. !!!

Thanks, Bill. I haven't measured the remaining groups. I was exhausted yesterday, and I've got a full schedule today. I am quite pleased with both the 280 and the Whelen. They exceed my expectations, and either are capable of bringing home game this year if I do my part. The Creedmoor should work out as well. And, the 375 Win has a lot of promise.

Glad to see your recovery from the earlier run-in with Mr. Murphy! Impressive results across the board. Got to get the .280 out myself one of these days... If it shoots half as well as yours, I'll be happy!

I may be hunting with 139 grain GMX bullets in this rifle. I built and shot nine rounds, and the results were very impressive. Velocities were excellent and the groups are sub-MOA. The E-Tip velocities are similar, but the groups were somewhat larger. Still, there are a couple of bullets that I'd consider. On the other hand, I'll build nine or ten rounds with the 150 grain Scirocco, and if this continues to shoot this well, there is nothing wrong with that as a hunting load.

Hi Doc, I can't remember :( I think that is occurring a little more as time moves forward, what twist did you get in your new tube? I could not wait any longer  and I sent a email to Travis this morning just wondering at what stage my rifle is at.

Blessings,
Dan

Dan,

This is a 12 twist Hart barrel. You are getting a 14 twist PacNor barrel. That is the barrel I was going to take, but this one came in as a mistake. The 14 twist will work very well; there is really no significant advantage for the 12 twist. Let me know what Travis says. I did speak with him about your rifle yesterday. I know the boys are working double time and some new people have been added to take up some of the slack. I am amazed at the volume of work generated. I guess those fellows in the oil patch and in the gas fields have more disposable income that some might imagine.

Nice shooting Mike...looks like the Whelen will be a shooter. As much as I like Nosler bullets, I have to agree with you and others on some of Swifts bullets. Just need to find a way to find cheaper versions than the stores sell.

Swifts are even more expensive here in Canada, Joel! They really go at a premium. Nevertheless, they are a robust bullet that have serve me well on more than a few occasions when hunting.

Hey Dr. Mike, I just got the email back from Travis. He advised that my rifle is just about complete. They have to powder coat the barrel and bed the rifle. I am sending up the VX1 that I am trading on the VX3 this coming week:).
I hope that you will have some time to play with it :) once it is complete.
I imagine that you can use some factory loads for the break in?

Blessings,
Dan
