IMR 4166,4451 & 7977

I picked up the 2015 Annual Hodgon manual and was doing a little light reading and daydreaming today. I was wondering if any of you have started working with these new non temp sensitive powders. I guess they're the next generation of "Extreme" powders and between the three they cover the spectrum of rifle cartridges.

I've ordered, and should have by the end of the week, a couple of pounds of 4166 and 4451. I'm already formulating some plans for which rifles will get the first "look see."

Whats the plan for 4166?

35 whelen, 358 Win, 35 Rem, 270Win, 223 Rem, 221Rem, 22 Hornet. Four of these could use the same powder and I always looking for that over achever for the 358win. TAC & IMR8208 are two I have looked at.

4451 is supposed to be similar to 4350 I believe.

7977 is listed as slower than 7828.HMMMMM.......

4166 is around the burn rate of R15 and Varget. I got a pound of it and will be doing some testing in about 30 days with a couple of my competition rifles that normally use Varget. Not sure who dreamed up the fugley colors for the cans!! :mrgreen:

Yea, looks like fun. But I can hardly get any of the old stand-by IMR powders! How will we ever see these new wiz-bang powders on the shelves?

I picked up 8lbs of 4451. I loaded same load in my 6mm Remington as 4350. Didn't have chrono set-up so not sure velocity. first 3 shots measured .25", then i pulled on making the 4 shot group .6"

I am going to load some 7mm Mag 150 gr next. I've used 4350 for that as well. Will update results and try and chrono the next shots.

The 4166 is suppost to burn the same as IMR4064. 4451= IMR4350 & 7977=ratumbo? spelling?

I looked at Hodgdon data for some of my rifles that I use IMR-7828ssc and switching to IMR-7977 I would use more powder. One of the 280AI I use IMR-7828ssc and using IMR-7977 and besides using more powder, load would be compressed. Be interesting to see how R-23 compares to IMR-7977.

Found a shelf full of 4451 at our little local hardware/everything store. Got all excited about trying the new wizbang powder....but at $37 a pound I think I'll stick with my proven load using H4350!

Wow! That's more than it is selling for here in BC! I'd say someone is profiteering off the scarcity of that powder.

Picked up myself a 8lber of 4166 today up in Canada.Can't wait to try it in re 22/250 as a alternative to VARGET.

Good to see it has made it over to our side of the border, I would like to try some of them especially IMR 7977 when it hits the market.

Nosler06 has a tonne of IMR 8208XBR and seems pretty happy with it. He hasn't had it long enough to do any temp difference tests, but it works for him.
