Well I took the plunge I order a Krieger barrel now I have to find the rest of the components.
So the fun starts trying to find them here in Canada.
Any suggestions are welcome!!!
Hey Dan, talk to Gary Eakin who runs Bighorn Sales and Machine in Houston B.C. (250) 845 2201 he might be able to help you or at least suggest who could help you get the components. He brought in my Benchmark barrel and was great to deal with. If you want a McMillan stock 24hourcampfire is probably the best place to order one and yes they ship to Canada.
I have sent a email to Corlane regarding a left hand action but not sure if they can supply at a reasonable price.
The action is likely hardest component to obtain but I will see what happens with Corlane or our shop here in Regina. The young smith here is really making a name for himself & I am really happy he is going to take on this project!!
It is nice when you find a new guy that does good work, you get your project done fast When he gets more well known then it can end up being slow like the big shops are, enjoy it while you can Are you wanting a Defiance again or something different? It is pretty easy to find a good LH Rem 700 and sell the stock and barrel saving a bit more $$$ in the end.
Yes Jerry I would like a Defiance action as Corlane had a couple fairly reasonable priced but couldn't find them on there new website.
If I go with a Remington getting it blue printed will cost about 800.00 including the action.
I was hoping to get the Defiance for around a grand if I can get for that I believe it is worth it.
I have been told Lawton actions are worth taking a look at as well?
Blessings,
Dan
If you can get one for 1 K that would be great considering they probably won't have to blueprint it for you like the typical Remington. Should be a fun project for you, good luck with it.
Question for the forum, I really do not have to do much walking anymore what is the opinion on a heavy sporter fluted?
Krieger makes that particular barrel in both SS or CM which would be the choice?
I would think a #3 or fluted #4 would be very portable and still heavy enough to promote good accuracy. Not sure how Kriegers profiles fall out against others though Dan.
Dan -
If you aren't walking much a heavy sporter contour will work well for the 280AI. I personally would not flute the barrel unless you are trying to save some weight (climbing hills or walking a lot). A Kreiger heavy sporter is the same profile as a Bartlein #3 contour, which weighs 3.5 lbs.
The biggest advantage to fluting a barrel is to remove some of the weight from the barrel. A #4 contour will have similar weight to a #3 contour with almost as much stiffness to the barrel. Fluting will normally run you about $150 for 6 flutes and is best done by the manufacturer instead of after it has been shipped. If the gunsmith doesn't know what he is doing, the fluting can put undue stress on the barrel. There are minimum contours for most of the barrel manufacturers on what can be fluted.
There is always the "cool" factor that comes into play with fluting as well. If I was building what you are building, this would be my choice: http://www.grizzly.com/products/7mm-5R- ... rel/T10564.
In-stock and a great price...
Good for you Dan. I went a #6 Pac-Nor with 4 flutes 28" but my whole idea was a long range rig that would out do a 7RM and nearly match a 7STW. At 3160 with 160's it does that it hits the scales at 12 out the door and flat shoots.
Order goes into Krieger tomorrow.
CM 26" heavy sporter barrel with a 1-9 twist.
Looks like maybe wrong time to do this as components of all sorts
are really starting to slow down to a trickle from states.
I believe there is a gun show here in Regina this weekend so I am going to
have to do some shopping if there are components I need.
