Well as some know I grabbed up another toy. Its the Compact tactical in .308 Winchester. Has what I believe is an HS stock (its pilliar and alumimum bedded) short fluted barrel and currently wears an older Vari X II, 3X9 with a matt finish. I bought it used a couple of weeks ago and have been gathering up parts and bedded the recoil lug prior to shooting. Today I got a few rounds thru it just to see what I had for a start. . It will probably do a little bit better as I readjusted the trigger this evening and will try a little different load in the next day or two. Here are some pictures, of the rifle and the target.

You're off to a fine start, Bill. Good looking rifle--very business-like.

Bill,

My buddy shoots a SPS Varminter in .308 win. almost daily. I know he uses 8208 and Varget primarily. His shoots 5 shots in the .3's typically. It's pretty accurate for a factory gun but it does have a Jewell trigger and a muzzle brake.

Bill,

Nice looking rifle, congratulations.

Bill,

Nice looking toy you got, congratulations.

Commonly referred to as the LTR or Light Tactical Rifle.

It's a real peach, and a favorite of urban SWAT teams. Rural too come to think of it.

Try some Federal Gold Medal ammo, 168 gr stuff. Should work out well. The rifle model has proven capable of excellent accuracy. I know a couple of SWAT teams that use them, and one guy who has used one for ALL his hunting over the past nine or ten years.

That looks very nice, should be a real tackdriver. Got to love a nice Remington :)

It look very tactical and functional, Bill, plus the initial groups certainly show promise. The 165 grain Partition at close to 2800 in that rifle might be the ticket for your jungle hunt? This rifle looks up to the task without getting all beaten up?

Keep us posted on the range progress with this rifle. It looks promising.

They do shoot. I had picked up an SPS Tact to use as a beater, but it shot every thing very well. I ended up making a tactical rig with it. As Guy stated, try the Federal GMM as it pretty much shoots well in just about everything. Also try Varget around 43.5 and work up alittle. The 165 AB and 168 Barnes both shot very well with 45 of Varget for me. Good luck

Nice! I've been looking for one since I read Guy's thread about one he set up...

Very nice Bill! Seems like it is going to be a shooter buddy! I imagine once you get it scoped up, you'll really have something fun to practice shooting long with!

Great shooting. Looks like a very nice handling rifle.

Cool rifle Bill! Should be a shooter!
It is nice, short and compact, it reminds me of the Marling Lever guns. Shot again today. 43.5 grains of RL -15 gave me a .621 group. Two in the same hole and one out a bit. I still think it will do better, severl of my groups have been the same way. Two under a dime and one out a bit, I am going to play with bullet seating depth next, then primer.

I have the SPS Tactical 308 with a 20" barrel. It will easily shoot .5" groups at 100 yards with Varget and 150gr BTs. Fun rifle and killed a few deer with it.

That is a fine group size, Bill. I do believe you have a winner in that rifle.

Brian, you need to throw a picture of your rifle up. I can't recall seeing it.

Rem 700 SPS Tactical 308 with Leupold LPS 2.5-10.

A friend of mine has a Rem700 LTR in 300SAUM. It's a great rifle, and his has accounted for several deer and many of the ever present and dangerous paper targets. He's got it scoped with a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40. I believe he's shooting Sierra 165gr boat-tails over H4350 or Varget, if I recall correctly. Very accurate, unique looking rifle. Handy in the woods, too, he says, even with the extra barrel weight.
