I was just wondering if anyone had experimented wit Retumbo in a 338 Win Mag.I love it in my 300.I currently use H4350 with a 225GR.AB.

I am only guessing, as I have not tried it, but I would think Retumbo would be too slow burning for good use in a .338 Win Mag.

Like you, I currently use H 4350 in my .338 Win Mag. However, I have had good luck with IMR 4350, IMR 4831, and RL 19. I have had ok results using RL 22.

I am shooting H 4350 with the 225 Partition. My rifle does not shoot the 225 Accubonds well at all! Funny thing about the 225 AccuBond in .338. I tried it in a couple of 338 WIn Mags, a couple of 340 Wby Mags, all with POOR results. Then I tried it in a .338 RUM and it shot groups well under a half inch! Go figure!

As a reference, the Hodgdon 2006 Annual Manual shows no loads using Retumbo in the .338 Win Mag cartridge.

Yeah.I looked there too.Found nothing.I was just curious.Thats weird. My M-70 BOSS shoots anything I've tryed @ under an 1".I have a group @ 750yds useing 250gr. Game Kings that covered a 5"X8" piece of paper.& My AB's shoot clover leafs @ 200yds.I'll consider myself VERRY lucky to have a factory rifle that does that.My previous Enfield wouldn't hold rounds on paper @ 200 yds.Hence I don't own it anymore! Thanks for the input.

IMR 4350 and RL 19
Used this powder for several years in a Win 70 in 338 Win.

Reloader 19 or IMR 4350 ......went to a different bullet this year the 225 Nosler AB and WOW! shoots like a target rifle!

Reloder 19 @ 76.0 with 225 gr AB
IMR 4350 @ 71.0 with 225gr Swift A Frame
Reloader 19 @ 78.0 with 225gr NP (HE Load)
WW brass Only

Hey Alaska. What M/V are you reaching? I'm @ 2750,& maxed out with H4350.Should I try some RL 19.Or maybe some H4831SC?I'm still waiting for a 250gr.AB! I can push that in a Game King to the same M/V as the 225 I'm now useing.Go Figure.Less powder too.

2832 fps with RL 19..........very accurate with 225 AB.
I like my case capacity in the upper 90% range filled. Unless I plan a trip down to the coast for big bear, the 225 AB fits my bill perfect here in the 338 Win. I have good results with RL19 and IMR 4350.
76.0 of RL 19 with 225 AB
You can go up to 78.0 of RL 19 in WW cases with 225 Nosler Part to duplicate the Fed High Energy load . That’s a max load I used it for few years on moose then went back down to 76.0 grains. 78.0 is upper Node load max. Highly suggest WW brass when using this load. I prefer the 76.0 of RL19 with 225 AB load but both are accurate. For 2023 moose season went back to my 78.0 of RL 19 load with 225gr NP in WW cases and Fed 215GM primers. Excellent performance on 425 yard shot on 40” bull.

Years ago before Reloader 19 was not avaiable I used Norma MRP in the 338 Win
which is like RL 22 along with IMR 4350.

anyone ever try imr-4350 to load 180 grain accubonds in the 338? no imr-4350 data listed... Any helps would be greatly appreciated.

I use Retumbo in a 25-05 with 115gr and a 7mm rem mag with 160 and it works great but to slow for a 338. The H4350 shoul work well, I have a load that my 338 loves with a 225 Partition is 78gr H4831 at 2950fps and it is as accurate as any 338 load i have ever seen or used.

I'm at about 90-95% case volume right now with the H4350,& can't get the 225 AB over 2750.I'm moly coating them for the throat protection, but I don't think thats the problem.I can get my 250gr. Game Kings to the same velocity in the same rifle. With less powder.& they're moly coated too.I hope that Nosler makes a 250gr AB soon.Anyway,do you think I should switch to H4831?I have some H4831SC laying around. When I get back from elk season,I'll try some & see what I can get.

I forgot.I'm useing 72.0gr. of H4350 & WLRM primers now. My older Hogdon book says that is my max load for a 225gr. bullet. Is there other data out there that says I can go higher? I do have a LITTLE case volume left. What does Nosler data say I can do with a 225gr.AB in a 338 Win Mag?

Killed most of game with the Sierra 165 BTHP in the 308 Win and the 180 GK in the 30-06.......switched over to Speer 165/180 Spitzer hot Cor.

As my load in my 338 Win with RL 19 and 225 AB that comes out of Nosler Manual.......I suspect Vel are lower than published.....but accuracy is great......so I will give up 100 FPS.....no difference on game!

I suspect also Retumbo will be too slow for the 338 Win.......Reloader 19 would be the slowest powder I would recommend.

IMR 4350 and RL 19 my favorite powders in the 338 Win

338 Win & 225 gr AB and Swift A Frame
71.0 of IMR 4350 w/swift
76.0 of RL 19 w/AB
78.0 of RL 19 w/ 225gr Part (HE Load)
WW brass only

I also loved my Gams Kings,& used them for several years. But I discovered that I had a Magazine Deformation problem that would affect the accuracy of the rounds in the box. Some bad enough that I couldn't hit a 3'X3' target @ 500yds. with the last 2 in the box. That was unacceptable to me,so I switched to the 225 AB's.They are as accurate as the GK's,& deal with the deformation issues I had.I was just a little dissapointed with the velocitys I was getting.Don't get me wrong. They are more potent than I actually need. But I would love to get one in a 250gr.

You should try some RL19. It's the shiznit for 338 WM and 225's.

I may try some RL 19 sometime, but since this is my only hunting rifle,I will stick with Hogdon Extreem powders,'till I run out of options.I'm afraid that the drastic temp,& elevation changes I hunt in may affect the loads.I'd still rather just switch to a 250gr. AccuBond.(Nosler???)& push it with the load I developed for my 250gr. Game King. Thanks for the input thoe.

I hear you. I don't know if life would be worth living, without H4350! I do appreciate that at least they brag on how it's tempurature-stable.

That said, H4350 certainly DOES react to temperature differences, and a powder like RL19 is hardly a time bomb waiting to go off on a 85 degree day! I work my loads up year-round and I just don't see the problem (with the powders I use*) that the "Extreme" powders solve. I have loads I'd rather not have to shoot on a 110 degree day, but then that's just as true with H4350, my all time favorite, as it is RL19, which I'm telling you is THE powder of choice for 225's in a 338 Win Mag. It's what the cool kids are all doing. C'mon man! Whadarya, CHICKEN?

:) :) :)

* H4350, RL19, RL7, IMR4198, IMR4895, W760, H110...

I have never had a problem in high temps either.I'm more concerned with a load thats made in 70* temps @ sea level,& then sits around for a few months,& then brought to 7000',& fired when its -5*.I have heard thet the MV can drop a few hundred fps. That would be enough to make a wounded elk,& a verry long day tracking.I had to hit my last bull @ a little over 500yds.I'm not afraid of useing another powder, just want to research the contingents before I switch.
