Where does a guy get one and what is a fair price? I would love to someday build a 280AI or some wild cat that will drive tacks at longer distances. Is Savage the way to go?

Mine sure works great! I bought a beat up 110 in 30-06 at a pawn shop. Put a barrel, trigger, and McMillan on it, and I have a damn nice rifle. Seems to put everything down that I point it at.

Good choice of caliber as well.

You can often buy actions on Savage Shooters.
I picked up a 110E rifle for $200 locally. I'm restocking it with a newer Savage stock and tuned up the action. It will be a fun rifle when I'm done for not a lot of money.

Usual price is about $250 for an action, but new Stevens rifles aren't all that expensive if you don't mind not having the AccuTrigger and other amenities. Used Savage rifles are probably your best bet as you can sell the parts you don't want and end up less expensive than an action alone.

Please keep the info coming. I love learning about things like this. What action would be needed for a 280AI or 7mmWSM?

Any of them would work. You can swap bolt heads pretty easily with the Savages WT.

Would the Stevens action be the same as the Savage? I am guess if they are, the trigger is the big difference.

Correct.

I recently bought a brand new Shaw barrel off E-bay for $164, a Savage 110 synthetic 30-06 for $163 at a local pawn shop, and a friend installed the barrel for free. I already had a scope to install.

So, for $327 I got a decent field grade 35 Whelen.........that I gave to my stepson.

I'm wanting to say I paid $300 for mine. If you keep an eye out you should not have to pay more than that.

I bet it shoots better than a few rifles costing twice as much. That is one heck of a budget rifle.

I found a used but never fired Savage 111 in 7mag for $300 which I thought was a great price. It shoots better than anything else I have had. I would stick with the Savage and I personally plan on buying a 30-06 size savage for the action so that can build a 280 AI like you are.

That's pretty cool, I paid a bit more than that for just the barrel of my gun and I bet that one will shoot about as good. Now he doesn't have to borrow yours :)

Gunbroker. You can find old ones and sometimes new ones dirt cheap/

So I did a little research and here is what I came up with.

Action=250
barrel (er shaw)=250
stock(boyd's)=100
recoil lug=30
trigger(basix trigger)=90

$720 for a rifle. Is that high or not?

High is a state of mind, where rifles are concerned. Is it high compared to what a Savage in 270Win would run you? Sure. High compared to what a full-blown custom would run you? Nope. Question is, is it worth $720 of your hard earned dollars to you?

I'm not sure about the pricing but if you get an Accutrigger model the Rifle Basix trigger wouldn't be needed IMO. The one on my model 10 Predator Max 1 has spoiled me, it is a great trigger.

I guess I am wondering if it is high for a Savage build or if there are ways to cut costs. I plan on looking at the local stores and TradingPost paper. Any thougts on the ER-Shaw barrels or are there others to look at? I really want to thank everyone for the info. I have a lot to learn still.

I paid $261 for a used but great shape model 111 in 270 Win. on Gunbroker and then sold the stock and barrel for $60.
The 3 screw trigger is easily adjusted and no aftermarket was needed on mine.
Lots of great prefit barrels to choose from besides ER Shaw. McGowen, Shilen, Rock, Benchmark, Criterion, Pac-nor to name a few.
I strongly recommend this site for info.

Building on Savage actions is a great hobby. You can get into a semi custom premium barreled rifle at a near factory rifle price, and customize it at will.
Fun stuff for sure.
You will need a 270 or 30-06 long action for the 280AI. They should be the easiest to find cheap.
The 7 WSM opens a can of worms a bit. Short action, magnum boltface, large or small shank etc.
