So helped a farmer with a 350 Legend. Loaded Barnes TSX HP 170gn over win 296.

It was very good at killing game fast.

Mike Avery - Michigan outdoor magazine, radio show/podcaster… took a 350 legend on a black bear hunt and it did the job just fine. Was actually a bit impressed. I’d rather have too much gun vs too little, but it was 100% effective on that BB hunt. Video was posted… I think on Facebook, maybe instagram, he has accounts on both.

So we have 350 legend, I understand why they went with the 355 diameter, but with so many outstanding 358 diameter bullets.. that’s what I would have done.

Then we have the 400 legend, and now there is a group pushing the Great Lakes 41.
And I am remiss to not mention the 360 Buckhammer which if probably what I would have designed.

The 350 legend was 1/2” with the Barnes HP and win296 powder. Fed GM SRP

Has anyone else endeavored to try any of these other cartridges?

I have a sickness, maybe it’s ThankfulOtter who has 275H&H, 300 and 375… I really thought it was cool to have the whole H&H family to choose from. I bring this up as 35 Whelan is an itch I’d like to scratch, but the results on the 350 legend did distract me and has the benefit of it’s usable in Michigan in the shotgun zone…

Thoughts on this wide open question?

Since I live and hunt north of the rifle line, I don't pay much attention to the 1.800" straight wall cartridges. From what I have seen, I would lean towards the 400 Legend or the Great Lakes 41 if I had to comply with those regulations.

Ron Spomer did a comparison of the .35 Remington to the new .360 Buckhammer and the new cartridge has more power. I don't understand why Michigan would not allow the 30/30, .35 Remington. .444, 45/70 when these new cartridges keep pushing the envelope higher then some of these old cartridges. They should grandfather in the old ones a 30/30 lever action would be a great gun for kids to learn on.

I hunt in zone 2 Michigan north of Bay City so I'm in rifle zone otherwise I would use my 45/70 by cutting down the case to legal length.
Fury Custom bullets makes Michigan legal 45/70 ammo for guys that have a 45/70 they are nice looking rounds but not cheap.

In politicians eyes a bottleneck case is way more powerful because it’s neck down. It’s all about visuals to them , not common sense.
Aint that the truth. Aint a whiskers worth of difference between a 30-30 and the 350 legend but the bottle neck. And some how the 30-30 is too dangerous....the only thing to dangerous is people who dont understand that the only reliable back stop is dirt. Its easy enough to forget.... but we cant. Sorry its my sermon- pray I never, never forget. CL

Steve, I didn’t realize how close you are to me. I live in midland, so main hunting spots are midland/clare county and Manistee county… wife and son work in bay city…
Agree. 3030 and 4570 should be ok in shotgun zone…

You have some good hunting ground I live in Warren but have property in Bentley which is about half way between Standish and Gladwin. My plan is retiring there in about 10-15 years.

I haven't played with the Legend cartridges to date...but as we don't have this type of restriction, I don't feel pressured to run out and try them, as I have rifles that work here already; 35 Rem (wife's saddle gun), 356 and 358 Win's, and 375 Win.

Great Lakes 41...have to look this one up, as I am unfamiliar with it. (Love the 41 Rem Mag...and would love to rebarrel a Marlin 336 to 414 Super Mag (just haven't been able to source a 41 cal barrel as yet...have dies and brass)

Collecting cartridge families is a cool thing! Be neat to hear of you do this with the Legends
Otter's H&H battery is very cool!

Having the collection of cartridges based off certain cases would be cool...30-06 family, 308 family, WSM family, Magnum family (264 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, 338 Win Mag, 458 Win Mag)
I have some of the cartridges of the various cartridge families. While I may never get them all, just having the ones of *most interest to me personally is enough for me! (Or filling **caliber gaps in my battery), and they could serve as a single cartridge based battery for a 2 or 3 rifle battery if forced to such an extreme!
E.g.:
308 family - I have (and have had); (243 Win), (260 Rem), *7mm-08, (308), *338 Federal, and *358 Win - as there isn't a factory .257 cal on the 308 case, I built a 250 Savage to fill the gap as it was close...well close enough for me 😉
30-06 family - I have (and have had): 270 Win, *280 Rem, (30-06), and *338-06 - have thought of getting the *25-06 Rem - and although the 9.3x62 isn't based on the '06 case, its dimensions are so very close, having this .366 cal is close enough here for me too!
WSM family - I have: *270 WSM and *300 WSM - have thought of getting the 7mm WSM
Magnum family - I have (and have had); *7mm Rem Mag, (*338 Win Mag), and *, **416 Taylor (458 necked down)

Electron is in Gladwin.
When you get up this way.. find me.
I’m on the board at Freeland conservation club (sporting clays/5stand/skeet/trap)
And a member at Midland. (Pretty complete and affordable club, pistol, rifle, shotguns, archery…I grew up at 14 and Schoenherr which you’ll know being from Warren.

I am allergic to all straight wall rifle rounds.

Unless someone were to give me a lever in 44 magnum. Then I'm down with them😉

My Dad has a 45-110 sharps Quigley thinga ma Jing
Tom Selleck came with the gun as well so he says.

He shoots 1000 yards with me at times and it's rather funny...
BOOM...smoke a cigarette...dad..you just hit 8 feet low.

Boom...listen to a song...it's on paper

I tell him my Jeep might beat his bullet to the pit

You should give the 45-70 a test drive sometime.

You should shoot that straight wall cartridge using black powder. Fun times.

I have...
His friend has the same thing in
45-70

That said..
and have experience with...
and utterly despise....
Any lever in 45-70, 444, 450 etc...

I just absolutely positively hate how they shoot. 🤬🤬🤬🤬

I'm a bigger guy. Not recoil shy...

But those lever guns in those bore's...
They recoil like someone is taking a rod and sticking it into my shoulder down to the bone.

I can shoot, and have any big bore bolt action with no brake.
Any of the Big Sharps rifles...
458 win mag in a Kleingunther, etc
All no problem. .
Ruger #1's in big bore.....
No problem

But...

A big bore lever, no thx. The geometry of those things for me...
Not no but hell no 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Fair enough.
I find the lever guns easier to shoot and oddly enough my perception of the recoil seems minimized.

I've actually done a fair bit of shooting and loading with the 360 Buckhammer. Haven't tried it on game yet. Carried it for black bear early last fall. No shot.

Handloads moved a 200 gr Hornady at 2311 fps with good tight SD & ES numbers. Factory Remington 200 gr ammo was quite a bit slower than my handloads and produced 1.5" - 2" groups. The factory 180 grain stuff was much better than the factory 200's for some reason. My handloads were better than either. CFE BLK was the magic ingredient and good bullets.

Set up a Henry with a Skinner sight that doubled as a scope mount. Used Talley QR rings and my 1.5-5x Leupold. I really like the rifle! Well made. Reliable. Handles great. Shoots just fine with .75" three-shot groups at 100 yards.

Regards, Guy

Well, I looked up that 41 Great Lakes cartridge...a shortened 30-06 case (1.8") that can push 180-240 gr .410 bullets from 2400 to 2900 fps...
As a 41 caliber fan (41 Rem Mag and really want a 414 Super Mag), this new cartridge has piqued my interest!
And the thought of chambering one in a lever action...even cooler!
The fact that they made one on a Savage Model 99, pretty cool. Would make one heckuva timber rifle for bears, moose, elk, bison, etc.
Thinking that another rebarreled Winchester Model 88 may get added to the battery! (250 Savage, 7mm-08, 338 Federal and 41GL) Would cover a pretty wide spectrum of game!

Gil,
I'm going to wander over there one of these days. They are about 15 miles away.
