Ummmm, about that resolution...

So, not too long ago I thumped my chest and declared "No new rifles!"

Yeah, right. Whatever... Reading the tea leaves, I figured out that in short order AR-15 type rifles are going to be hard to get. Now my employer has given me one, either the semi or full auto version, since the late 1970's, and I managed to always resist buying one for myself. Even helped my oldest son buy one a few years ago... But now I've got my own.

Nothing fancy, just a 16" Bushmaster semi-auto with the telescoping buttstock. Carry handle can be removed. I figure I'll set it up pretty much like the one I carry on duty. Eventually it will have a flashlight, an EOTech, and I probably won't be able to resist trying it with a scope at some point too.

Ordered dies, a shell holder and a bunch of 69 grain Nosler competition bullets. Already have Varget and a mess of small rifle primers on hand. So, looks like I'm in the Black Rifle game with my own rifle now. I'll be darned. Always did sort of like the things. Mama was even happy to see me get it. That was surprising. I'll bet she enjoys shooting it once it's up and running.

Ah well, it wasn't 2013 anyway - so I didn't REALLY break the resolution... Only in spirit!

I'm certain you can receive absolution, Guy. Just confess your fallen situation and Fotis will pronounce you forgiven. Scotty will assist in this transaction. Consequently, good move.

It's a 1/9 twist - we have those at work and they handle the 55 - 69 grain bullets well.

Yeah - it was really kind of tough for me guys. Not expensive, but there was a beautiful Ruger Number One, in .270 Win for $200 less than this ugly black AR-15... Sheesh... If it was a .30-06 I'd have been more tempted.

I like AR-15's for what they are, always have, but... They're just not as cool to me as a nice wood & blued steel hunting rifle. What can I say? Still, it is good to have one. All the good guys should have one!

That's my problem Guy. I had a nice one back in California, but I have shot one so much for work, the desire to own one of my own is slim.. I guess I might be outta schlitz now, but I am still not hurt too much by it.

Like Fotis's signature, if Guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns!

Agreed. I have one but I like a good solid bolt action in my hands. They have a purpose and place but it's normally the last one I will grab for a varmint.

I am with you Scotty, I lost interest in work guns when I left the 4th Inf Div. Rather have pretty and functional at the same time for hunting now. Man, the M16 type semi's are certainly selling around here as well.

Good acquisition Guy. I must resist. I think I'm the only gun owner in Kalifornistan who still have to own one of this black rifle. Even Jim coaxing of building me the most accurate black rifle this side of Mississippi can't coerced this die hard bolt guy.

Nice pickup, Guy.

A couple of weeks ago, I was in a local shop that had a display case with an entire shelf of $99 Aero Precision stripped lowers. I went back in yesterday to grab up a couple, and they were all gone.As were all the P-mags.

Congratulations Guy !!

I started in the service with the M-14 then before my deployment we switched over to the 16. They shot well (as long as they were clean) and had less recoil that the 14. My scores actually went up with the lighter round. I don't think I have fired one since 1967. Enjoy !!

Not much of a photo - and just a basic 16" AR-15, but it will get spiffed up just a bit in time. I'll keep it portable and pretty simple. I like 'em that way. Likely a flashlight, an EOTech sight, and hopefully a GemTech suppressor... Over time. Right now I just want to shoot it as is:

Very nice, Guy. I can assuredly see the appeal the black rifles have.

To err is human - to forgive divine. Give your wife a hug and take her out to dinner! It's nice to have your own black gun. The local shop was cleaned out within 3 days and they had a large supply! Between our local mall shooting and the talk of bans they don't have to worry about inventory taxes this year.

Dr. Mike - I don't think of it as "nice" at all - would have much rather bought another Ruger Number One - but the time seemed right. I think it's a good thing to have, and I enjoy shooting them, but no matter how tricked out they get, they don't do much for me.

I think my wife is actually looking forward to shooting it. She likes the way it handles, and is interested because I told her "virtually no recoil."

Nice is an innocuous way of saying, "Fascinating." I am fascinated with the black rifles, as I am with other combat rifles. There is a limit to my budget however, so I look but don't buy as I focus on bolt action rifles (an a few lever guns  ). I have no doubt that were I to pick up something like that, my wife would enjoy pulling the trigger; and then I'd really be chained to the bench (after buying a Dillon).

Looks good Guy. That should give you a ton of service. Plus, if you wanted something else, I imagine you could always get another upper! Maybe?

Scotty - the only differences between this one and the rifles in our patrol cars is that the department rifles have flashlight mounts and single point slings. Otherwise this is the same as I train with all the time anyway.

The SWAT bubbas have fancier rifles by far of course, but I like to keep these simple.
