Looking to start another project. 6-284 on a CRF action. Currently looking a few rifles as a donor. A Ruger 77 MKII V/T in 25-06 or a 270 or 06 in a Win 70 any Pre-64 style. It will have a 26" tube 1-8.5" in a Varmint contour probably he same contour as on the Ruger Varmint and depending on which donor I go with will determine the stock. Micky A5 for the Win or the current stock for the Ruger. Any suggestions? I might also consider a Montana action as well but will probably stick with a Win.

Whilst I have a couple of Rugers and I have shot a fair number of Montana actions, I still prefer Winchesters. I honestly can't say they are better; I just like the idea. Biased? Probably.

Jake, what ever happened to your other 6mm-284?

Between the 77 Mk.II and 70 CRF actions...I think I'd have to give the nod to the Model 70. I think the 77 Mk.II action is decent given its similarities to the 70, but the 70 comes with a better trigger to begin with. But then again, the Ruger 2-stage is not a bad trigger at all. I can see either one shooting *lights out* with a good barrel screwed on.

Still got it. Its my fathers I just load for it. It has a left handed stock on it and I love the rifle but don't enjoy shooting it much can't get comfortable. I really like the 2-stage on the Ruger it's nice. My 22-250 is a Ruger V/T and shoots lights out.

Does anyone know where theres an afordable M70 Classic in 270 25-06 or 30-06?

I like the Ruger, MRC and the M 70 in that order. The Ruger is a good action.

I have owned a couple of model 77 Ruger' and a lot of Winchester's. I would go with the Model 70 for CRF feeding, Jake.

I fall into the same nuthouse as Mike, grab a Model 70 and get it done!

Honestly, for that style of rifle, I'd be looking at one of the custom M700 clones... Defiance would be my likely first choice, or Stiller.

why no savage if i may ask. I love mine and you can do everything for a build yourself without a lathe. Plus i am hooked on tag safety's.

I get that, but once that M70 bites deep into you Kurt, it is hard to look elsewhere!

Me too - but if a fellow really wants CRF (for ultra-reliable feeding while facing those charging prairie dogs & pronghorns) why not stick with the good ol' Model 70 Win or the near copy, the Montana?

Are the Ruger bolt actions more difficult to properly bed? Thought I'd read something about that, somewhere.

Here's another thought... for a varmint/pronghorn/deer rifle - which a 6-284 seems to be:

Not a crf but the 700 action can make a most accurate gun! My 6mm-284

I get that, but I'm not too sure that a chunky 26" barreled 6mm needs CRF. Bedding is easier on the round bottomed receiver, and the tolerances in the action are already pretty fine.

I'm gonna be the odd duck and put my vote in for a mauser 98, preferably a commercial FN or BRNO.
