So I have just aquired a new .243 ( well its actually 53 years old  ) so I have a Classic Stainless 70 BOSS in .243 that I am left to do something with.

1. Rebarrel ( into what)
2. Sell and buy a long action
3. Keep as is.

I will say that I am not a fan of the current 18 inch barrel with the BOSS. It is way too loud IMO even with the BOSS CR ( conventional recoil) on it. I already have a FNSPR in .308 so I don't need another .308. I already own a .348 M71.

I have been thinking about turning it into a 358win or 7mm08 with a standard contour barrel. The 358 route would carry iron sights and be a brush gun. 7mm08 route would be set up for my daughters. I already have a walnut stock for it so I would cut it short for them to use when they are smaller.

Or do I just cut bait and buy another in long action. That way I can cobble up something a little more interesting ( in my eyes).

Oh and I will post pics of the new pony in the stable as soon as I pick her up!!!

1. Rebarrel - with a .473" bolt face and a 2.045" case length you can go up to a 260 Remington for deer hunting or go down to 22-250 for varmint. Essentially limited by short action. My choice would be for a 22-250 Ackley Improved with a 26" Pac-Nor 3 groove in a fast twist like 1 in 8 or 1 in 9 to shoot heavy bullet like 75 grainers

2. Sell and buy a long action - what I would do, don't like short actions and sounds like you need a heavy hitter like a 300 win mag and up

3. Keep as is - self explanatory

Your choice

Either the .358 or the 7mm-08 would be very nice. I really enjoy both, especially my .358. However, a 7mm-08 for your girls would be very nice. They are going to need just such a rifle one day.

Crud. Forgot to list.. .

I already have a 300 win mag, 375H&H, (3) .270's, Ruger #1 in .223, .348win, 22 hornet, .308 .

I never thought of a 22-250!

I kinda like the all weather 358 Winchester idea Pat. I wouldn't be put off at all having a Model 70 358 Win. I doubt I'd ever pony up for a Pre64 version.

Rebarrel to 6.5 Creedmoor...
I like this one!
Some other things I'd look at if it were me... 325WSM, 338Fed, or better yet... 6.5WSM. Although you mentioned the 7-08 for the little ones. That is what my daughter's been shooting. Really is a well mannered round.

I really like the idea of setting it up for your daughters.

Some general-purpose, mild-kicking short action cartridge would be perfect. A .243, 6mm Rem, .260 Rem, 6.5, 7mm-08, .308 Win... Any of those could be made to work very well. Make it a girl's gun, something that fits a youngster. Shorter length of pull. Lightweight. Simple. Consider a fixed power scope. Cushy recoil pad. Avoid anything that will make it a big ol' studly he-man gun that's heavy to lug around or kicks the snot out of the shooter.

Why not? I sold a Win 70 Classic Sporter that wouldn't group well, and bought the 700 CDL that seems to serve as my "do it all" rifle most years anymore. Trouble free accuracy and reliability.

Pat, how does it shoot? I had a Browning Micro Medallion in .243 with an 18 inch barrel and the BOSS (I don't really care about the noise) and it shot like a house afire! I sold it because I am not really an A-Bolt fan and I wanted some thing else in another caliber. I also have a BOSS, Model 70, 22 inch + 2 inch BOSS, .30-06 that on occasion shoots smaller than 1/8 th inch groups. I restocked it an put new bottom metal on it and it still shoots amazing groups out to 300 yards.

Well, yes, I suppose everyone should have a jack handle in the car, in case they have a flat.

If you were to sell it, Pat, what would you ask for it? Because, starting from that number, you can back-figure what you could do in terms of the long action and building something you really wanted. Then, is it worth it? Only you can decide...

They are handy, arent they?! Also double as a canoe paddle and a tomato stake... Put the 243 in the safe. The kids can use it some day, if you dont first and it will be even more of a classic. Sorry screamin' I coulnt resist....Some times I think Im funny.... CL

1st choice- 7mm-08

2nd choice- 6.5 Creemore or 260 Rem

3rd Choice- 300 Savage...just for kicks (or a 250-3000 for that matter)
