Fascinating summation of current trends. Not terribly surprising. Less recoil tends to allow longer time behind the rifle. Some thought-provoking concepts for anyone building a rifle for competition. Good post.

I wonder how much if any cost plays into this? Smaller bullet, less powder equals more shooting for the same money.... Add compatible ballistics and it's a win win
 
Yes. There has been a strong swing towards the smaller, lighter-recoiling cartridges in rifle competition for years, decades even.

Why not?

I do believe that when I finally wear out this current .308 Win barrel, I'll buy the next in 6mm or 6.5mm.
