.45 Colt & .45 ACP Chrono Data

My son and I spent a couple of hours at the range today. First up, we ran some ammo across the chronograph, and he got to practice with his .45's while so doing.





Ruger Blackhawk, 4 5/8" barrel

.45 Colt: 250 gr Winchester Cowboy 680 fps, SD of 8 - very mild, and accurate

.45 Colt: 200 gr Cast with 8.5 grains of Unique - 922 fps, SD of 16, more report, easy recoil

.45 Colt: 240 gr JHC Sierra with 10.5 grains of Unique - 996 fps, more bark, moderate recoil, SD of 12

.45 ACP (From the Blackhawk) 230 grain FMJ Blazer - 779 fps, SD of 28

.45 ACP (from 5" Kimber 1911) 230 grain FMJ Blazer - 828 fps, SD of 8

Interesting how the same ammo from a different gun can have better velocity and lower SD. Of course my samples were only five shots each.

The young man is getting better with his .45's too. Both the semi auto and the single action revolver.

Guy, SD would only be valid in a revolver if you shoot them all from the same cylinder. The revolver has six chambers, the Kimber only one.

Plus the Kimber does not have a cylinder gap to let some gas escape during fring. That gap probably accounts for much of the difference.
