Cross your fingers and throw salt over your shoulder......or whatever you think may help.

Going under the scalpel September 25th.

I was in an auto accident in 72 and three vertebrae were cracked and compressed. Laid in bed for 9 months. Over the decades I've "re-injured" that area and parts of my lumbar region under it as well and I've been told several times it would all catch up with me in my later years.
They knew of what they spoke.

Along with the normal "old man" spine problems common to most, I have three spurs growing into my spinal cord and while I have 5 bulging disks, one is shot completely and I've been slowly, but surely losing the use of my right leg due to intense pain and numbness. It got worse this summer.

So.......wheee, the surgeon is going to go in and grind off the spurs and after separating the two vertebrae that are pinching the nerves between them, they are "fusing" the two together, done with metal pins and a clamp on the back side.

"Five days to two weeks" is the "normal" hospitalization time period, they say, if and only if there are no complications. Then at least three months of "taking it easy" and physical therapy.

I asked and Doc said I should be able to get around well enough to hunt a few days come firearm season November 16th........."BUT NO DRAGGING!!!" Doc said.

"Hello, Son? I need your assistance for an hour or so. You busy? "

The doc made the day complete when, after an hour explaining what to expect and answering my questions, he said...."You know that right hip has to go, right? I don't know how the heck you walk far with it NOW. We'll discuss that after you are up and mobile from this first operation."

I told him he could have talked all day and not said that. :|

No replies really needed, best wishes and prayers are appreciated even without.
God Bless
Steve

For sure, I'll pray with you, Steve. My back was broken in three places way back in '63. Auto crash (some "friends" thought it would be funny to drain the brake fluid from my truck). It has left me crooked and twisted (not a great situation for a preacher, but...). After all these years, this is catching up with me, though I likely will not ever have surgery. The medical system when you have single payer insurance isn't prone to do much for old geezers like me. Pain is your friend, or so I'm told. May the Good Lord show you mercy and give you a swift and complete recovery.

Just a short update. I didn't croak during the 4.5 hour surgery, am home, so far so good. (y)

Some remaining issues but I see the surgeon again tomorrow.

Thanks for all the support, gang.

How are you doing Steve? Or does anybody know how Steve is holding up?

Steve is "holding up" on a walker. LOL Doing just ok.

Had to postpone appt with surgeon I had today. My ride called and couldnt get their vehicle started.

It's called "Reid Luck"........

I searched for several days before finding a surgeon I thought had enough positive patient reviews before I chose one. It's my fault that he is over an hour drive away but.......I wanted a top notch surgeon. I've had three minor surgeries prior to this one and all three turned out like crap, two leaving me with life long issues that weren't supposed to happen. Needless to say I was scarerd *hitless before this one but maybe the drive is worth it but Doc is NOT happy with me not able to come today.......yehaa! Man!

Thanks again to all.
God Bless
Steve
