I’m downstream of a ruptured dam and a failing dam. We had major flooding as the dam operators had the flood gates wide open. Last night at 5:45 the first dam failed, within a 90 minutes the highway that crosses the lake was closed and the water wash over topping and eroding the dam. The river should peak in the next two hours about 5’ over the old record near 34’.
There were a ton of leave now and evacuate orders. I think damage for us, will be lower level as I’m sure it will overtop my sandbag work. I think I’ve lost my reloading bench etc.

I’m one of the church people who’s been recording our pastors message so members can watch online. Basically the church is in the evacuation zone, as are two the pastors, sound guy and camera operators. I hope we figure out some thing while we have a little time to prepare.

My wife went to work. I will telecommute today. Can’t go home yet as water is still rising

Kudos for the county emergency response. We had one false alarm on the dam that failed at 5:45. They said imminent failure likely 18 hours too soon, 4 hours later the engineers-talked them into an all clear... 14 hours later, it blew out, the lake dropped 5’ on 30 minutes. Then on to the next..

I don’t know the total on evacuation orders, but I’d guess 10-15,000 people.

Probably won’t be able to return home for a couple days.

Tough to sleep two nights now.. maybe 3 hours?

Thankful to be alive, thankful to know God had a plan, even when I don’t understand it. Thankful for so much and looking forward to another fresh start in this adventure called life.

My son was a great help. We moved many things up the stairs before the false alarm, then worked hard for 3 more hours moving things.

If you have friends in despair over lockdown. Encourage them. Hold your loved ones close. Give thanks for the good stuff in life and forget about the bad stuff (mostly, suppose we should learn lessons and move on too)

I’m not a philosopher, I’m probably rambler. Not sure when I’ll post again, you reloaders are good people. Happy to know you!

MJC, I am sorry to hear of your flooding issues. I hope all of your family, friends, and neighbors are safe. The devastation from that type of flooding is unimaginable to those who haven't seen it. My thoughts will be with you during this difficult time.

Dan

I read these reports last evening in several news feeds. It is always gut-wrenching when it is someone we know. I do pray for God's mercy and provision for those effected by this dam break, and especially for His grace and mercy for you, Mark.

My neighbor got to my house on foot and took this picture for me.

Water line says I had 6’ in the basement.

Quite a bit of damage. They tell me water should start receding in a day. The second lake is still draining, it overtop failed and eroded vs the other that blew out.

I think it will be a while before we can start clean up and have several days of repairs to make it live able.

Happily we are safe, working, and healthy.

Thank you for the well wishes.

Mark, I am sending good thoughts and prayers for you and your family, actually all affected by this disaster. May God protect and preserve all humans and help the restoration efforts following waters receding. Sincerely, Rol

MJC- So glad that you and yours are ok. So sorry that this is something you are having to go through. 10 years ago next month our home was struck by lightning. The resulting fire, and water damage had us out of our home for several months. Pray that things go more quickly for you. Not the same thing.... but please know there is good life on the other side of this. Prayers for you...keep us updated when you can. CL

Thank goodness that you are all safe. Good luck with the clean up and repairs. It will be a nasty but finite job and you will get through to the other side.

Good luck on your restoration. Time and determination will get it done. We had similar flooding here after hurricane Sandy. Virtually every home had water over the top of the beds. It was a nightmare for the entire region but we got past it. You will too.

Flood water, back in the streams and rivers (not the lakes). Heard about people harvesting fish trapped in Puddles where the lakes were.

The basement has three sections. I have gotten mostly through two sections. Still some cabinets that need to come out.

I haven’t got to my reloading bench and safe due to debris, but I can see the safes went over and the bench is upside down.

The safes upset me a bit because initially I was thinking a wave of water somehow hit the safes hard enough to flip them. Later, I figured out, they probably floated ..... I can’t see if they are water filled or if the floated. One is water tight up to 24”, my freezer flipped on it’s back and all me deer, bear and fish was fine and still froze on day 3. Love that freezer.

Advice on the safes? Should I replace them?

In water 3 days. Yes, I got the guns out.

Can you revove the back of the doors of the safes ?
Some oil might help to keep them working.
You don't want the mechanism to rust and get stuck when it is closed...

Great question... hopefully latter today I’ll get to the safes...it was the last room the water reached lots of stuff in the room from the adjacent.. so thinking the water rushed carrying other stuff.

Lost great grandpa’s old radio (upright style), great grandma’s China cabinet.. kids air hockey table... my helpers all liked that one.. until we tried to carry it out. Four man job....

By Tuesday the focus will be on sanitization...

I’ll try to get a photo of the quick and dirty door. Pretty tight.

Did pretty well. My wife set up a bleaching and rinsing station. For things I wanted to try to salvage. I think most camouflage and base layers will be fine.

Electronics didn’t far as well. Lost trail cameras, gps, infrared spotter

Mark,

Glad to hear that you and your family are ok. Get ahold of Matt at Hoogerhyde Safe in Grand Rapids. If he can't help you, he will point you in the right direction to someone who can.
