Finally getting started on my .243

I've just been occupied with other projects and life in general, but I'm trying to pull off a trip to Wyoming next year for antelope so I figure that I better get started on a load for my .243. 7mm magnum will come as a backup but I hear that goats aren't too hard to put down. I have some components I've been collecting and have an idea of where to start but I'm open to suggestions. Rifle is a Savage 12 vlp with 26" barrel. I have 100 pieces of Lapua brass on the way, plenty of BR2 primers as well as some 9 1/2 M primers. I'm planning on some Long shots so bullets are 105 a max or 105 hpbt match. Please save the "Use hunting bullets for hunting not match bullet" comments. I've done a lot of reading and I'm confident that the a max will be fine. I do have 95 grn ballistic tips as well which l will take as a back up load. For powders, I have H 1000 which is where I plan to start along with IMR 7828ssc and also H 4831 SC and H 4350. I think for the 105 grn bullets that the H 1000 or the 7828 is going to be the ticket? If anyone felt like running this through QL I would appreciate it! Right now my plan is to start at 46 grains of H 1000 at .005 off the lands and work up in .5 grain increments to 48 grains if I can get there. Any thoughts?
 
I have not used any h1000. But I have had great results with 7828ssc as well as h4831sc. With 95 Berger vld hunting my best load was with rl22.

Just looked at the Nosler load data again and I see that 46 grains is listed as the max. Might be best to start a bit lower...lol. Nosler also shows H 4831 giving about 100 fps faster than 7828 with the 105 grain bullets. I Still want to start with H 1000 but H 4831 sc might be better than the 7828.
 
If you can lay your hands in some Hy-brid 100, you'll find top velocites with a nice even pressure curve. This powder really shines in the 243 & 6mm rem. with the real slow powders I think you'll find your compressed load without hitting top velocities as there is just not enough case volume to reach full potential . Again start low and work up. Good luck.

I heard a rumor that 100 -v was slated to be discontinued? Also supreme 780 which looked like a good one. I have no idea if that is true but I don't currently have either and I don't want to work up a load for a powder and then find it discontinued.

...I've probably read the same things about the A-Max as a fine "hunting" bullet, but my experience w/ them has been pretty marginal, they worked, but not very well...

...I'm probably as fond of B.C. as anyone, but when it comes to a "hunting" bullet, I start w/ terminal ballistics & work my way back to the rifle, instead of the other way around. Being able to shoot something 100-200yds farther away w/ a bullet that may or may not work like it should tends to create more problems than opportunities...

Awesome! Thank you. Those are some surprising predictions with some of those powders and the slow ones like H 1000 and Retumbo that I thought would be great are way low on velocity. Perhaps because it is stopped at 100% case fill?
 
7828, 22, H1000, Retumbo all work great in my sons short barreled 243 with the 105 AMax. I use 22 though and out of a 20" barrel get 2975 with the load. It is very accurate and easy to shoot as well.

Run the AMax into some jugs at some different ranges. Trust but verify.
 
Rest assured that I will be doing milk jug testing at various ranges. I really don't plan on shooting an antelope from 50 yds away but 100 yds seams possible on out to 600 yds if the conditions are right. I've shot that far with a .223 so it doesn't seem out of the question to me.

Interesting. That did bring some of the slower powders into their own.Seems like you can't stuff enough H 1000 into a .243 case to get there! Looks like I will be focusing on 7828 ssc and H 4831 sc which look like almost perfect matches. Another thing I noticed is that H414/W760 seems to be the most versatile powder for the .243 with decent velocities with bullets from 55 grn all the way up to 105 grn in theory! This has helped quite a bit. I will post my results after I get some loading and shooting done.
 
46.2grs H1000 gets 2820fps my 24" barreled 243 Win. I have taken it out to 800yds and it works great with the 105 HPBT. +13.5 MOA is money @ 620yds and +21.5 MOA is money @ 800yds from mine. If it was going 3000fps I don't see how it could be any better.


I've shot several .75" groups @ 200yds and several 3-4" groups @ 600yds off a bipod with a 3-9x40 Mark AR.


I tried H4831 1st and never found and accurate load. I went to H1000 next and it has been awesome. Even at a slow 2820fps it still carries 1k lbs to 500yds and doesn't drop below 1800fps until 700yds.
 
I can attest that Retumbo works very well in my 243 with the 105 AMax. My rifle is a Remington VLS with a 26" barrel. I researched various powders and found an OCW load, don't know if you've followed that theory/practice, of 48-48.3 grains of Retumbo with a CCI 250 and WW cases. Start 5% below that and work up. I get 3000 fps and no signs of pressure. Believe it or not have shot out to 1000 yards in our club off-site LRTR shoot and had very good success.

The BC runs right at .495 and drops based on 3000 fps were very close to actuals proven in field. It makes the 243 'think it's bigger' than it is. Look at the ft lbs when you start getting out to 600 yards or so; compares favorably to some larger cartridges!

I am more surprised that you were able to cram that much Retumbo into a .243 case than I am about the 1000 yard shooting. I had not heard about OCW before but I did some reading on it last night. It's an interesting method that may have some merit. I've never used the ladder test to find a load. The OCW method is similar to what I've done in the past already.
 
It's full but it fits. Might have to do a little tapping of the case on your bench as you pour the powder in!
 
Retumbo worked very well in my 243 AI with the 105 Amax till the barrel went south. Plan on trying H1000 with the new barrel since I now have a large amount to play with.
 
Not much too report. My Lapua brass did come in and OAL's measured between 2.035 and 2.040. Trimmed all 100 to 2.035. I could start priming but I'd rather wait till my RCBS hand primer comes in.
