Just wondering if anybody has experience with RL 22 in 280 Rem..It shows a lot of promise in .270, so I figured it should do well in 280. Right now my best is Rl 19 and 4831 a very close second.

If some kindhearted gentleman would run a QL, comparing 19 and 22, it would be great.
Win 70 FW
22" barrel
Hornady Brass

Thanks!

Thank you...Looks like 22 is worth trying, especially if I wanted to work with heavier bullets at some point, although I don't know if a 22" barrel will make much difference between 19 and 22. I Also have some RL 23 and Superformance I'm going to experiment with.

Here is a QL selection of powders that has the #5 node. It's the highest node. Max pressure is 58,740 psi and these loads are just under that with good velocity. There are some powders in the list you are interested in trying. That should give you some insight on what you are trying to accomplish. These loads are with the 150 AccuBond LR, the 140 Accubonds were over max trying to get to the highest node so I skipped that unless you want slower velocity which I believe you don't want.

When RL 22 was introduced i used it to work loads in a my first 280, a custom Mauser, with Shilen barrel. The powder was "new" but similar to MRP,and IIRC was also made by the same company in Sweden.

Coincidentally I worked up to 61 gr in Remington cases with the 140 Sierra, Nosler Partition and Bitterroot and after some shooting , chronographing and loading the same cases, I dropped the charge to 60 gr for 3080 fps in my barrel.

It killed well.

The QL data is interesting....seems I was loading a bit hotter than the 59,000 psi called for by QL, but not by much. I never had any problems with the load in that rifle or the M70 FW that I also had.

In my first .280, which also was a Model 77 ( and I bought it in 1977!) I used 55gr Imr 4831, a Rem 9 1/2 primer, Rem cases and the Hornady 139sp. I never clocked it, but I shot my first "long range for me" buck at 276 big steps down a pipeline right of way. DRT! He still had a mouthful of grass! Later in life, I used R22 in a Mountain Rifle reamed to 280 IMP ( 22"bbl) I used 61gr R22 with the 150 BT. It only gained 50fps over the same rifle as a standard .280. I only had issues with that load down in Texas ( around 90 deg) but I had worked the load up higher and cooler here in Utah. I got great results with R19 in a .240 Weatherby ( think 6mm/06) but it pooped out in a 338 wm in colder temps...just the opposite of how R22 acted for me. Its really the same ol, same ol, IF you can, work up your load in the same temps you hunt in. That's the best way, but you can hedge your bet with the Temp stabled powder, i.e. Hogdon Extremes, several others. There is nothing wrong with a 22" .280! Have a ball!

Supposedly RL 23 is very temp stable..I have about 3/4 of a pound left and I'm hoping to give it a try with the 140 AB to see what it'l do. We can have some pretty wild temp swings around here during deer season sometimes.

What's a wild temp swing? :?:

I've killed up in Alberta with RL22 in the 270 and 7 Mag to temps down to 25 below zero.

Its my go to powder in the 280. 56 grains with the 150 E Tip at 2900 FPS. Sub half inch at 100 yards. I love it. :)

It's not uncommon to start out deer season with sunny and in the 70's* and few days later be snowing and 20* or vice-versa, But for the most part the temps stay pretty stable.

We certainly don't see high temperatures here in northern BC. A day with temps rising to 30 C (86 F) is hot. I have hunted in -35 C temps (-31 F). Don't care to say that it is right chilly at such times, especially when the wind begins to blow. I've used quite a few cartridges charged with RL22. Everything I shot at during such times managed to die (likely due to sheer terror at the thought that Dr. Mike was behind the trigger  ).

Dr Mike the shooting/handloading world is in a funk over "temp sensitivity". I swear a lot of it is "monkey see/monkey do" .

I noticed this propensity of cartridges to lose velocity as temps drop years ago and back then prime offenders were single based powders like IMR4350, IMR4831,and WW 760, which was maybe the worst I've seen. I would not load it on a bet and have not used it for years.

Actually double based powders like MRP did not do too badly at all.And RL22 is very similar stuff. I have shot scads of game with R22 in the 270, 7 mag and 300 win mag.

But with all the noise and chronographing the worst I ever saw in velocity loss was about 100 fps,and that was going from load work temps of 80-90 clear down to "0" to minus 10 degrees.

I do not believe any of the stuff I read about temp sensitivity going from summer heat to 20-40 degrees. Anything 10 degrees and up really is not "cold" and if a load cannot behave and a rifle can't stay zeroed in these conditions it is not suitable for any BG hunting IMHO. :)

I daresay that over the past decade, at least three-quarters of those for whom I have worked up loads requested powders that were not "temperature sensitive." My own cartridges are still using some old standards and delivering some fine accuracy in some pretty brutal cold. Yes, the single base powders do lose velocity with cold temperatures, but such is less noticeable with double base powders. I do verify my loads before hunting in similar temperatures. I do have two caveats--I'm not hunting in high temperatures and I am not really into long-range shooting. I do shoot to longer ranges at the range; but I've never taken an animal beyond about 325 yards.

I know its been a while, but I finally got around to working with some of the QL data..I'd pretty much settled on RL-22, but curiosity got the best of me and I drug out the 1/2 lb of RL-23..All I could source locally was some Hrndy 154gr Interbonds. 57.3 gr started showing some flattened primers and the speed was 2868 average and a 4 shot group of 1.165" Not stellar by any means, but ok for a deer load around here. Next up is Vihtavuori N560, which I was very surprised to see my local store have. along with N540. It'l be tough to top the Reloder-22 load, but its fun trying!!

Try some RL 26 with those 154 Hornadys and see what happens?

It's on my list to try down the road..Over on another forum a fella had some pretty impressive results with it and 150+ grain bullets in a 280 Rem.

RL16 seems pretty good as well depending on what you find. I've seen good accuracy and 2900's with 150 grain bullets from it.

RL26 and 150's should be a rocket ship in the 280 Remington.

Trouble is finding Alliant powders locally can be tough, Especially 26, 16, 22, and 19..According to the website, Cabelas has RL-26 in my "local" store which is 100 miles away, but fortunately I'll be going that way Thursday for work, so hopefully I can find some then..

Yeah, I have kinda succumbed to just ordering enough to make it worthwhile to pay the HazMat fee, doesn't take much.

If you get to the eastern side of Virginia, Green Top always has a good selection of powders.
