Shot the old 30-06 a little yesterday. Had some loaded with the 165 AB and RL16. Seems to work pretty decently. Only chrono'ed one round at 58 grains for 2846 FPS.. Pretty sure there might be something in there to work with though.

Scotty is the Will Rogers of the rifle scene................he never met a rifle he has not liked.

Scotty - I've never used RL-16, for any cartridge - you know that powder well. As I bumped my H4350 charge up to get velocity like you're seeing, and more, the groups got better. Cool, speed & accuracy. I like that.

I ran the 165 gr Ballistic Tip which proved very effective on game last year. The AB should be even better.

Firmly believe that a .30 cal, 165 ish grain bullet at about 2800 - 2900 fps is an excellent general purpose load for the good old .30-06 cartridge. I've not yet tried the E-Tips, but dang, they're tempting too.

Good luck with your load, I too think it shows promise.

I have been playing with 168 CTBT and RL16. 57 grains is printing a little under 0.5" at 100 yards, which is pretty good for me.

For the CTBT, what does it like for a jump?

Indeed, that RL16 is proving most alluring for me. I believe I'm going to have to order some and do a little work with it. The other ReLoder powders have been good to me over the years, the RL17 turned out to be a better performer than I might otherwise have imagined. You just may have a shooter on your hands with that top charge.

Scotty do you have any IMR4350? A 165 grain bullet and 57 or 57.5 grains IMR4350 should give you some indication of accuracy potential. All the 30-06s I have shot have liked it.

Amen to that. I shoot 57.4 grs of IMR4350 and either a 165 gr. Partition or AccuBond. Both grouped exceptionally well.

The 4350's and the .30-06 are a time-proven combo that just plain WORKS! (y)
+1
I started loading for my 30-06 in the early 70's, with IMR 4350 and 150g Speer BTSP. Probably got lucky on the seating depth, but had a sub-moa group at near book max. That load took quite a few mule deer over the years. Looks like RL 16 maybe very accurate as well.

I think RL16 will work well. It did very well with 180's at another time. I think it was right at 2720 and the accuracy was pretty good.

I have IMR4350 as well, but being RL16 seems like H4350 in just about every aspect so far, I think I am going to try and work it a little more and see what happens. Really, I am looking for exactly what Guy mentioned, a 165 at between 2800-2900 with good accuracy.. This would be a load I can load a bunch of them and zero up the gun and just have on stand by. This rifle has been in the same awhile, and I finally decided to see what it would do. So far, I like it, it is a real easy shooting rifle.

It does appear that the rifle will produce when fed the right recipe. I'm going to have to order some RL16 and play with it.

I agree H4350. The first load I threw together!

It seems good Mike and like you, I've had incredible luck with Alliants powders over the years. 16 is supposed to be temp insensitive as well. It's pretty danged speedy in a 270 Win with a 130 as well.

Scotty I thought I would meet my maker before you would be out shooting a 30-06 of all things. I about had a case of the vapors!!

You must not be too bad of a guy after all if you shoot a 30-06. It was questionable before that though let me tell you!!

Scotty, load up a pile to play with, practice off hand, prone, etc....you can never have too much good ammo!
(..like good coffee .. or good fish/meat)

HA! I will get this one shooting pretty soon. It is an easy shooting combo. I figure that this 165 should be a jack of all..
