Are you shooting a MK V?

I ask because mine has a 1:10 twist and was wondering if it will stabilize this?

According to Weatherby website it is a 1-10 twist. Do you think I will have issues with 168 gr LRAB?

Jimbeaux

You may or may not have issues Jim. Only one way to know I guess. The 168's are long suckers though.

I still can't believe Weatherby can't run a little faster with their 7mm. Such an awesome cartridge but hampered with the 10 twist with todays bullets.

Not sure what powders you are running, but H1000, Retumbo, RL33 and RL26 have worked excellent for me with the 160-175's in the Mashburn which is just about a twin to the Weatherby.

Scotty,

I have been loading 160 gr Accubonds with VVN 160 getting about 3/4 in groups and 3100 fps. I primarily hunt white tailed deer and have been satisfied with this load, able to ring steel targets out to 600 yds with relative ease. Just on a whim , since I had ordered some 150 gr and 168 gr ABLR last year, I decided to try Noslers "most accurate load" in their manual to see how they shoot. I will also run the 160 gr NAB with their most accurate load recommendation and see how they shoot. The only problem I have had with using Nosler data is that the velocities I get are usually way under what Nosler publishes. I understand all the reasons for this but other manuals data comes closer to what I get than Nosler. My Weatherby Accumark has a custom 26" barrel which should have tighter tolerances and the 2 extra inches over Nosler's 24" Lilja barrel should help on the velocity. We will see. I have loaded the 150 gr ABLR yesterday with retumbo at the recommended most accurate charge and will be loading the 160 NAB today with RL 25 at the recommended most accurate charge. Nosler recommends Supreme 780 as the most accurate for 168 gr ABLR and I dont have any of that. Not sure if I will go and buy some just for this test so may just try other powders from Dr Mike's QL run.

Anyway, as most of us handloaders do, I'm just a tinkerin' in the endless search for the "ultimate load".

Take care

I absolutely understand the tinkering part Jim. Your 160 AB at 3100 is one of the perfect sorta loads in my opinion and I was able to attain decent accuracy with RL25 and the 168's in my 7 WSM. If they will stabilize in your barrel, I would think Retumbo would have to hum with that bullet.

Was your new barrel set up with a Wby chamber or did you have it cut differently.

Even if the 168's didn't stabilize, I'd imagine those 150 ABLR's rocking along at 3200 would be pretty serious as well. Plus, it would be a laser beam at distance. Good luck and please keep us updated to how it all goes.

Scotty,

rifle has a Weatherby chamber. It was a Mark V originally that I sent back to Weatherby for a conversion to Accumark after the accuracy of my original barrel fell off to below what I was happy with. I went ahead and loaded the 168 gr ABLR with 74 and 76 gr Retumbo and will report back next week after I have shot them as well as the other loads I have tried.

Jimbeaux

Nice, looking forward to seeing what you get with it. Retumbo is really danged good for getting incredible speeds from the heavier bullets in my 7mm Mashburn. I think once I am done monkeying with the 150-154 class of bullets I am going to try some Retumbo with 175 Partitions or Woodleighs.

Scotty,

I just finished firing my test loads and was again disappointed with the ABLR's. Again I was trying to duplicate loads listed in the Nosler manual as "most accurate" and shooting them thru a Weatherby 7mm Wea Mag Accumark. Here is what I shot:

1 - 76.0 gr Retumbo, 150 gr ABLR, 3.360" as per manual, Fed 215, 3020 fps , 3 shots - 2.625"
2 - 78.0 gr Retumbo, 150 gr ABLR, 3.360, Fed 215 , 3093 fps, 3 shots - 2.293"
3 - 72.0 gr RL 25, 160 gr NAB, 3.360", Fed 215, 3020 fps, 3 shots - .965"
4 - 74.0 gr RL 25, 160 gr NAB, 3.360", Fed 215, 3128 fps, 3 shots - .988"
5 - 74.0 gr Retumbo, 168 gr ABLR, 3.340" per manual, Fed 215, 2915 fps, 3 shots - 1.428"
6 - 76.0 gr Retumbo, 168 gr ABLR, 3.340", Fed 215, 2985 fps, 3 shots - 3.390"

As you can see, 160 AB's do very well in my rifle but RL 25 does just about what VV N160 does so no reason to change. But it does not like the 150 gr nor 168 gr ABLR. I did not chase bullet seating depths but as you can see they were seated with considerable jump which is what is generally recommended for ABLR's. I may try and reshoot the 150 gr with BT's and see what happens or I may just stick to what I have now with the 160 gr AB's.

I did not see any evidence of keyholing with the 168 gr ABLR's.

Dang Jim. Was hoping they'd take off for you.

With 160 ABs shooting at 3100 I can't see much reason to use anything else. That's a stomper of a bullet.

Thanks for posting your information.

My 7mm Wby Fibermark shot the factory 160AB's very well, but they no longer offer those. I have been contemplating using the RL-25 as per Nosler, or the RL-26, when getting it ready for an elk hunt this fall. Your data suggests that the RL-25 may work well.

Did you ever think of the RL-26 for this one too?
And did you ever try the factory 160 AB loads in this rifle?

Thanks!

Dr Vette,

I have a good supply of RL 25 so did not consider RL 26, but I would think it work work about the same. The Weatherby Factory 160 AB's shot about 1" in my rifle and I have been able to slightly better that with my handloads. MY VVN160, 67.0 gr, 3100 fps load shoots about 3/4 inch.

It is good to have options. Sometimes that Weatherby or Norma ammo is hard to beat.

Yes, until they quit making it.

I have tried, as did the previous owner of my 257 ULW, to match the Weatherby factory ammo's performance. So far it's not possible. It shoots <0.5 inch at 200 yards with the factory ballistic tips or Accubonds. Not so for reloads.
