Recently picked up a Weatherby Vanguard S2 and looking for powder suggestions. Going to be used primarily for coyotes. Thinking 55gr?

Thanks!

Check your twist rate. I helped a friend with his Vanguard, had a 1-12” twist. It definitely preferred lighter bullets. He wanted 55gb bullets till he saw he could shoot eyes out of yotes with 40 gn bullets. His two best bullets were the Barnes Varmint grenade in 36gn. We used IMR 4198 and were 1/2” easily.
55gn were running 3”.

My favorite powder for 223 , particularly for bullets less than 65 g.... is H322.

It is a very small grain extruded extreme powder.....which means it meters well, and is relatively temp insensitive. I use the same load for p-dogs in the Blaz'n heat of summer as I do for yotes in the dead of winter.

My bullet for your purpose is the 50 g zmax (exact same as vmax but cheaper with a green tip), but 55 will work just the same. Vmax's aren't fur friendly....but are show stoppers on yotes.

Try some H322 ... typically find accuracy with this bullet below max (90%).

I shoot a lot of Hornady 55gr SX bullets and my brother likes 50gr ones. The twist rate will be fine as long as you do not try to shoot anything heavier than 36grs in the Barnes VG bullets or their TSX/TTSX bullets.
My hands down favorite powder(since 1970) is Win 748 with 55gr lead core bullets. It works best in my varmint rifle, Encore Pistol and several other rifles. One of which is a Howa and that is all a Vanguard is with the Weatherby name. It also works with 40-50gr bullets. For 40gr V-Max I actually like Benchmark for faster speeds and accuracy. Another 55gr powder is H335. I use mag primers for all loads especially ball powders. A friend likes the IMR 8208 powder

Look at the powder burn rate charts and most anything between the IMR 4198 to Varget range will work.

I like Ramshot Tac quite a bit. I have read a lot of good about CFE223 and intend to try it in the future. My favorite powder for lighter weight bullets in 223 is W748. It doesn't get much attention, but has been incredibly accurate for me.

Tried 55gr BT over 24grs Benchmark

And same bullet over 24grs H335

Rifle has a 1-9” twist.

I have a 9t 223 that shoots the 70gr RDF extremely well with AR Comp, easily under .5 MOA all day long.

I use CFE223 with 50gr Zmax, 40gr gr Varmageddon with IMR 4198, hell I've used Varmint powder with 52gr HPBT with great success. Now I've upgraded to the 22-250 and plan on using 60gr Vmax and CFE or 53gr Vmax and AR Comp for winter coyotes.

I haven't found it awfully picky as long as you keep it in the medium rifle powders. I plan on trying H335 with some 55gr Hornady SPs for a back up coyote rifle. I don't think it matters a heck of a lot with this rifle.

The two best powders I've found in a couple different 223's with lighter bullets are TAC and the newer IMR 4166. Both scoot 50 grainers out pretty quick with very good accuracy. They both are temp stable and have copper fouling inhibitors so they help keep your bore pretty clean. 4166 has kinda been edging out TAC on the accuracy side for me, but both have generally been accurate in every rifle I've tried them in with 50 NBT's, which has become my go to bullet for the 223.

I've had good luck with H4895, varget, cfe223 and AA2230. Hard to say which is best as I shoot a lot of different bullet weights out of different rifles. I have probably used AA2230 the most with 55 grainers.

If I'm starting from scratch with a different gun, H335 is the first one I try with bullets in the 55-62 grain range. And you can't count out Varget for the heavy bullets..But, in my "'yote toaster" AR...Tac, CFE223, and BLC-2 have been excellent performers. But AR-Comp is my huckleberry!!

Skookum rifle; and it does appear you have a fine load to use. Should equal game when you get it out.

I like AR Comp too...especially for the heavier bullets.

I haven't loaded for the 55 grainers in a while because the American Eagle shoot so well for me but I think A2495 was the best.
