Anyone have any experience loading for 256 Newton?

I'm waiting on my 'new' rifle to show up and just wondered if anyone had experience loading for this old cartridge? Thinking of 130 gr.
 
I just finished reading the Terminal Ballistics write up on the 256 Newton and the similarities are so close to the 6.5-06 they claim you can interchange load data.
If I were you I would read the write up at Terminal Ballistics before I tried swapping data.
 
They are close. But not enough to use the 6.5-06 load data interchangeably. The Newton case has less case capacity than the -06 case.
I didn't know if QL had anything close to it or not. I was hoping someone out there had messed with one.
Thinking of using 270 brass to make cases then trim.
 
Yes, QL data base includes the .256 Newton.

Thank you so much, Dr. Mike. I'm a little surprised how well QL seems to thing RL 33 would do. Might have to play with that one some as well as 7828ssc and H1000 (3 powders that I have along with IMR 4831 and 4350)
BTW, this one is supposed to have a 24" barrel so maybe 30-40 fps more than what is shown.

The Newton was loaded at markedly lower maximum chamber pressure than many modern cartridges. One can only speculate whether modern rifles and brass would benefit from higher chamber pressures.
 
Just for fun, I upped the maximum chamber pressure to 60k psi. This is way over the recommended Pmax, so don't imagine that I am suggesting that this is safe. Until it is tested, there is no way of knowing. What is interesting is the 200 fps increase in velocity. I'm certain that would be of interest to some who self-identify as speed demons.

I would say so!
The rifle is built on a Mauser action from the era (1914-16) so it may be strong enough to do 60k. I'm not really going to push it too much. Just want some accurate loads to take the old girl out once again.
 
Updating this one. After a fire that burned part of my garage (and ruined a bunch of my reloading gear), I managed to cobble together some loads using 7828 ssc - 50 grains. Took it out and the scope crapped out on me.
Put an old steel tubed Weaver on it and I'll play with it some more this weekend. Hopefully, if I can get it sighted in, a pic with this old lady's first deer in a while.
 
One more update. Replaced the scope with another one and went back out yesterday. Looks like I'll need a shim under the front base. With the scope all the way up, I was hitting a foot below poi. This at 100 yards.
Any ideas for a good item to use as a shim?
 
I think if you look on Brownell's they have various thickness of shim stock or you could just use a cheap filler gauge and punch screw holes in it once you find the right thickness you need.

Aluminum from a soda or beer can has worked for me. Leupold has been good at sending shims in the past for their mounts as well.
 
That's what I was thinking of trying. Have to be a diet Mtn Dew can though ;)

Updated on another thread but thought I'd bring this one up to date (I hate when someone asks for help and then disappears)
Took the soda can angle.
2 shims under the rear base, 3 shims inside the bottom of the rear scope ring and 2 shims on top of the front scope ring (scope ring shims inside the ring) put me about a foot low and 3" left. Adjusted the scope for shot #2 and was still 3" low and 3" left. Raised it for 3" and right 3" and struck the bull at the 1 o'clock position.

Didn't have time to work out a load this past weekend but maybe this coming weekend.

Right now I'm running with 50 gr 7828ssc and the 129 ABLR. I'll order some 123 Scenars to try with this as well. That or the 130 gr SGK HP. Any of those will drop what I'm shooting at.

That double-set trigger is such a joy to use! Recoil is mild, even with the steel butt-plate.
 
FWIW, Ken Waters did a load work up on the .256 Newton and you can get it from his Pet Loads book.

Ok, another update on the Newton.

Finally got the Scenars (123 gr) and got some loaded with the IMR 7828ssc. Ran from 52 gr up to 53.5 (had loads at 53.8 and 54.1) and put 3 into a slightly larger than a half inch group. At 97 degrees and light/no winds, I'll call it good.

Next I'll load up 10 rounds and run it across my magnetospeed and see what it's doing.
