Thank you very much, appreciate a quick response

I just got in from hunting bear and happened to look at the forum. Glad to help. Welcome aboard. Hope to see you posting again.

Thanks, I would appreciate if you could assist with QL data for my .243Win as well

Nosler 95gr BT
Hornady 95gr SST
Hornady 103gr ELD-X

Barrel Length: 24"
Powder Type: Somchem S365

DrMike perhaps you can help out here. I have quickload but to be honest I am way too scared of blowing myself up to really use it.

I am using the following:
Barnes TSX 85gn with Vithvouri N160 in a .243
Berger VLD hunting 85gn N160 in a .243
Barnes TSX 130gn with Vithvouri N165 in a .270
Barnes TSX 165gn with Vithvouri N160 in a 30-06

My question is simply what would you suggest as a starting load for development and what would be the max (how far before the max would you suggest is safe to load in .2 of a grain?)

This is a big task and I understand if you can’t do all this for me.

I have to redo all the load development thanks to a change in powder.

If your scared of blowing yourself up maybe you should just use the data provided by Burger and Barnes in their manuals or on their web sites.

I would but there is limited data on the Vitahvouri powder.

That'll be a very full case.

Matching Maximum Pressure: 59350 psi, or 409 MPa
or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 112 %
These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

I suggest dropping back at least 5% when starting a new load or changing the lot for any component. That should keep you safe. Everyone has his/her own standard for determining maximum charge, but the simplest solution is to rely on pressure-tested data. However, since each firing system is an entity to itself, you can increase charge in small increments, watching for signs of over pressure. Know that you are tickling the dragon's tail when you do this, however. I personally am more concerned with accuracy than with velocity. The difference of a couple of hundred fps is insignificant in ensuring a clean kill of game at ranges of less than 400-450 yards. Candidly, I am a hunter and not a shooter.

......a clean kill of game at ranges of less than 400-450 yards. Candidly, I am a hunter and not a shooter.

Thank you so very much for this. I really appreciate the effort that I know went into helping a stranger

Wish you lived closer I 'd Buy you a beer - I am in Johannesburg South Africa so if you happen to be coming this way to hunt..... call me

Bigbza,
There's a Vihtavuori reload app.
https://www.vihtavuori.com/reloading-data/

Thanks mate - this I have looked at. When I said limited data, there are things like the .270 on the Vita site only has data for a 140gn bullet I bought the 130gn. The burger and Barnes Websites have data for other powders but not the N160/165.

While I'm not a total novice I am still cautious and trying to understand what the implications of dropping 10gn on a bullet does to the load. In the case of the .243 I botched it once before (using somchem powder s365) and blew out some primers. This is not a stable powder and is very temp sensitive. It was our only option till last year.

There is also an abundance of great help put there - someone said "the powder manuf is too conservative start at the max and work up from there....." I like DrMike am a hunter and not a long distance target shooter - I don't need the max node but would be happier with a load that is accurate with a low sd and Es

Thanks for the guidance though it all helps
