Here it is. Remington 700 XCR in 338 RUM. Bought a few years back and never fired… time to put it to use!

338XCR.jpg

The plan is to top this with a Leupold VX-7, 2.5-10x45 with B&C reticle. Primary use is late season, wet nasty weather, thick NW jungle, with most shots less than 50 yards. I've had bad experiences with rusting on blued guns when you just can't dry stuff out and the main reason for moving to stainless.

This will also be used for bear in the Cascades and the reason for bringing this project to life. For less than 500 yards the plan is to use the 250 gr AB because the drop matches up with the B&C reticle. For over 500 yards I'd like to use either the 265 ABLR or the 270 ELD-X.

Based on some average testing data, the ballistics are nearly identical. The data below is a relative comparison. I suspect the actual velocity will be higher based on reports I'm finding online.

ABLR_ELDX_Ballistics.jpg

Due to limited time this fall, the highest priority is trying to come up with a load in one trip to the range. If I can't, I'll stick with the 250s and be mindful of distance. Open to suggestions on how to achieve this with the below components.

For bullets:
I have both 265s (thanks to someone on this board who responded to my request) and 270s in possession.

For powder:
I have RL22, RL25, RL26, and Retumbo to work with. Based on some reloading data and others’ experience I'm thinking either RL26 or Retumbo, with a preference towards RL26 due to quantity available.

I'm running Remington brass and CCI 250 primers.

Below are pictures of the bullets.

ABLR_ELDX_All.jpg

ABLR_ELDX_Bullet.jpg

And for some average measurements:

265 ABLR:
Overall bullets length: 1.703”
Base to ogive (touching) length: 0.915”
Ogive to tip: 0.788”

270 ELD-X:
Overall bullets length: 1.696”
Base to ogive (touching) length: 0.897”
Ogive to tip: 0.799”

My length to lands is 3.087”
My max magazine length is 3.680” (I’m noting Nosler tests to 3.600” COAL)
If I use 3.680” that puts the bullets: 0.195” and 0.206” off the lands respectively.

So here’s the debate:
I understand it’s better to use known published data for a quick development. That would narrow it down to the 265 ABLR with RL26 at 3.600”. I know of no known load data for the 270 ELD-X in the RUM.

However, from most of the information I read online, the ELD-X seems to have a higher percentage of accuracy than the ABLR. If I’m trying to make one trip to the range, I don’t want to deal with a finicky ABLR.

Although the bonded ABLR is probably a more well-rounded bullet, the interlocked ELD-X with min expansion down to 1800 fps fits the intended distance window nicely.

I’m inclined to try the ELD-X with RL26 (Nosler shows max 87.5 gr) at 3.680” COAL and seat deeper if necessary. How would you go about deciding which combination to choose?

I think your limited time to get to the range drives you to selecting the components/recipes that are typically the easiest to tune.

Sounds like you ve already determined and researched a lot of those probabilities.

Good luck to finding your load quickly.

Great looking rifle. If it were me I would stay with the 250 AccuBond as it will do well out to 1k. Retumbo is a great powder in the rums, should be very close to 3000 fps. I use it with 200 AccuBond in my 300 rum.

Yeah, I wouldn't sweat the 250 AccuBond a bit at extended distances at all. I'd say as long as your impact velocity is kept over 2000 you'll be A Okay with it.

Saying that, experimenting a little with the ABLR and ELD X sounds like fun and the ABLR might work really well from the get go with that much jump into the rifling.

Hornet,

I have been using both bullets over the last several months........ I had to try the Hornady after running low on the Nosler. I am shooting a Montana Rifle Company X2 with a 26 inch barrel. I have 3 load combinations that have had great success.

Retumbo
93.5 grains
3.635 OAL
WLRM Primer
Nosler 265 was at 2944 to 2954
Hornady 270 Eld X was at 2948 to 2950 w 5 shots tested.

Rl26
87.5 grains
3.60 OAL
WLRM Primer
Nosler 265 gave 2976 to 2982. Have shot the same load w the Eld X now......but do not have velocity numbers yet.

IMR 8133
97 grains
3.640
WLRM primer
Nosler 265 gave 2949 to 2954. Have also worked the Eld X with this load.....but no velocity check yet.

I have worked up to these loads..... so they should not be considered a starting load for your gun. The RL26 is the maximum load published by Nosler. The Retumbo and IMR 8133 loads were developed using the Hodgdon manual.

These loads have shot w extreme accuracy out to 1950 yards now!

Good luck with your build!!!

Dang, now that is a potent combo right there! Ain't nothing you couldn't touch with that..

I've had great success with the 250 gr AB and 98.6 grs Retumbo for 3000 for and .5 MOA from a M700 LSS out to 800 yards.

This is well worth listening to. Ol' JD does a lot of deer-shooting at long range with his 338 RUM.

Thanks for the feedback.

Those are some serious loads MtE. Nowhere around here to shoot 1950 yds, but that's impressive.

The 250s sure are a dandy, and I've been very happy with their performance (in another rifle). If nothing comes out of the trip to the range, that's what I'm bringing.

Still mulling around the options, but I'm leaning towards starting with the 270 ELD X, RL 26, at 3.640" and seeing how that goes.

Loaded up one set of ladder loads using 85.5-87.5 grains of RL26 at 0.2 increments and 270 ELDX at 3.640". Going to try to make it to the range this week for a test. Will report back.

Speaking of 250s, does anyone happen to know max load for the 250 AB with RL26 powder? I don't have that combination in my Nosler data.

I have run Retumbo and RL-26 with the 265 gr. ABLR. Both shot great, but I preferred the RL-26 load. Think I settled on 87 gr. for 2930 fps. Shoots very well and is an absolute hammer on elk.

When you get time, and want to experiment with another weight, try the 180 Ballistic Tip and 99gr H4831! It was one flat shooting devil to 400yds ( I'm a point n shoot hunter) and at 250yds, it acted like a Partition on a big heavy Aoudad, complete penetration! I only used Retumbo with the 300 RUM and 200AB, but that 250AB is seriously a slick looking bullet. Good luck to you pard.

Made it to the range. I'll just say that the results were underwhelming. Velocity is quite a bit under what others are reporting and I didn't encounter any pressure signs. About 2800 fps max for the 270 ELDX with RL26.

And for fun, I tried the 250 AB as well. About 2900 fps max with RL26.

I considered continuing to load above max until I found pressure signs, but decided to hold off until I could evaluate everything. Starting to wonder if either the scale or chronograph calibration is off.

Looks like this is going to require quite a bit more work.
