Anyone out there bored and have time to do a QL Calc? I am actually looking at a reduced load for Bobcat, as many people in the various forums comment that full power 223 will blow a huge hole in a cat. Looking for a load in the 2200-2400fps range. I'm guessing 19-20 grn will get me there.

223 Rem
1:12 Twist
20" Tube
50gr Speer TNT & 55 Hornady SPSX
H4895

Thanks

Getting velocities down that low will create other problems.

According to Hodgdon you can take H4895 and reduce loads by 40% for low velocity/recoil. I'm going to give it a try, since we have located a big tom bobcat and don't want to ruin the hide.

Speer manual has 12gr. of aa5744 doing a little over 2000 with 50gr. bullet and the 55gr. bullets.

Been a few years since loading any reduced H4895 loads but I think if you load around 65-70% of the full power data you should be around 2450-2500 Fps. A slightly tougher bullet than the Hor SX or Speer TNT might be another good idea for saving the hide.

Good luck

I had the H4895, and even at the reduced load, you can't double charge a case, so I would prefer to go with it.

I thought about the tougher bullet, but I am hoping for no exit, as every one I have seen with an exit has a huge hole.

Was looking for a reduced load for turkey. Used H4895 came up with 20grs powder 55 gr Sierra spt Haven't checked the speed but shot a coon at 20 yds and the exit hole was about the size of a dime. If I was saving the hide as you want to this would have worked I think. Group size at 100yds. was 5/8 in out of a 22 in Ruger American. Dan.

Thanks! We will be hunting in dense forest (pine/fur), so hits will be close. If it didn't blow the coon apart I should be good. Appreciate it.
