Thank you, Dr. Mike! Preacher, two reasons: One, I like it and use it for a bunch of other loads. Two, this is a really short barreled .30-06 and a fast powder like H 4895 seems to reduce the muzzle flash. That said, if it didn't work out, I'd be tempted to try a 4350. I have some IMR 4350 and have always wanted to play with H 4350.

Varget would be another fast burning option for the short barrel. It would take very similar charge weights to H4895. With that said though, I can't imagine H4895 won't be a good choice. Very versatile powder.

I see. I always used 58gr or either 4350 with 165-168, give or take a 1/2 grain. I never used an '06 with less than a 22" barrel though. Now, I've "tried to help" some old guys sight in their Mod 742 Carbines, back when I was a naïve/innocent/just want to help 20yr old. The blast was so bad ( factory loads) that when they finally cut the edge of a paper plate at 50yds, they called it good. Of course, they missed all kinds of shots, but that "wasn't their fault". ha That 47.6gr load will work for you. I doubt very many factory loads actually give the 2700fps they advertise (much less the 2800fps loads that are out there) even in 22" barrels. At least they used to be awful slow. No matter, fast enough for deer! :)

Yeah, this is a peep sighted brush gun. It gets used inside of 100 yards, so I don't really care whether I get 2600 fps, 2700, etc. Right now, I shoot a pretty hot load of 4895 with 180 speer hot cors and get 2650fps out of the 19" barrel, with no noticable muzzle flash.

I like your reasoning! And the lower velocity often improves bullet performance with normal "cup and core" bullets. Not so sure that slowing down the Barnes will help it any, they do respond well to a high impact velocity.

Should be a pretty doggone good load within the parameters you've laid out for us.
