I like my Henry color case hardened .45-70 very much, so I decided it needed a little sister. Henry came out with a CCH model in the pistol calibers, so I'm in the process of buying one in .45 Colt. Primarily as a "woods gun" for deer, with shots out to about 100 yards max. Also for some plinking, as it will be cheaper to load for than the .45-70.

I'm intending to use the Speer 260gr JHP bullet and H110 powder. According to the Hodgdon data, the load of 23.5-24.0gr generates about 1350fps from a 7" pistol barrel. From a 20" rifle, I'm expecting 1500-1600fps.

Anybody loading .45 Colt in a rifle, particularly using this powder/bullet combo? Any thoughts, recommendations, etc.?

I prefer the jacketed flat nosed 300 grainers from Speer and Sierra in my Henry all-steel 45C. I like the greater penetration aspects.

Bludot, L'tl Gun, 2400, H110 powders will get you to where you want to go without hot-rodding.

I have to ask. What is the twist rate in the Henry in .45 LC? I had a Winchester M95 in .45LC and it would not shoot 300 gr. bullets worth spit. The twist rate was way too slow. I considered rebarreling but decided it wasn't worth it. While at the range one day a fellow shooter made me an offer I could not refuse.

A 1 in 16" twist for .45 LC would do a good job stabilizing a 300 gr. bullet. The 300 gr. bullet at about 1500 FPS would come close to duplicating the old 45-60 black powder load in power.
