Handloading for 2020's hunting has commenced in earnest!

After trying a few different bullets & loads for the 25-06, some years ago I made a shift to the 115 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip loaded over 57.5 grains of Retumbo & sparked by a Federal 210 match primer. I was so tickled with the results that I nicknamed the bullet & load The Blue Cyclone after a fun old song I enjoy. With the blue plastic tip, and the results on game, it seemed a great choice for a nickname. Year after year that combo clocks somewhere around 3150 fps or so, and produces groups easily under MOA, which is great as far as I'm concerned. I've made kills from 160 to 420 yards with it. Yup, Blue Cyclone.

Well, I'm busy loading them again today! Had the 25-06 out at the rifle range yesterday, practicing at 100, 200 and 300 yards, and noticed that my available supply of Blue Cyclone ammo was rather depleted. Oh No! That can't be allowed!

So - how much ammo does a hunter really need for hunting season anyway? I dunno, 10 cartridges? Enough to check zero, go shoot a couple of critters and have a few spares in a pocket, just in case.

But nooooo! I enjoy shooting my hunting rifles. I enjoy practicing with them. So, I'm busy loading up at least a hundred fresh Blue Cyclones for practice and hunting. It just makes me happy, so why not?

This year I'm hoping to hunt elk, black bear, mule deer and antelope. Elk will be with my bow. Black bear of course can be taken with a .257" bullet, but I personally prefer to use something bigger. The mule deer & antelope? Those 25-06 Blue Cyclones are just about perfect. Mild recoil, great accuracy, flat trajectory and things sure seem to drop fast when I squeeze the trigger on the Remington.

Now this doesn't mean that I've given up on the 7mm Rem Mag, the 30-06, the 45-70, etc... But it just seems right to be working with one of my favorite rifles as hunting season approaches.

Best of luck to all this fall.

Guy

I’d think something is wrong if I didn’t see a fresh batch of them getting ready to hunt. That load has done great for you. Plus, I know after having shot similar loads it’s not hard to love the ballistics at all.

Looks great Guy. Nice rifle also. The 25-06 is on my list one of these days. I had one and gave it up as it was a Ruger in a semi varmint barrel and was a tad heavy for a carry rifle. The 25-06 is a great cartridge that doesn't get the recognition it should these days.

I wanted my own Blue Cyclones after following your history with them, Guy. So I got some blems from SPS - grey tips. Might have to get a blue Sharpie. Thanks for the details and inspiration! My 25-06 is an Encore with the 28" fluted barrel. I'm getting accuracy and velocity without much trouble. Checking the Wyoming draw results tomorrow!

White Devils wouldn’t be a bad moniker with the amount of animals you out down with them ET!

I use the 115 gr BT Blue Cyclones in the 257 Roberts. They have given impressive results on deer and coyotes.

It dawns on me that IF my stock of 115 Blue Cyclones ever run out, I really ought to try some of the other .257" Nosler bullets I've got on hand:

115 gr Nosler Partitions - they shoot great from my 25-06 BTW, maybe better than the B-Tips...

110 gr Nosler Accubonds - haven't shot any of these yet.

100 gr Nosler E-Tips - haven't shot any of these yet either.

Let's see, do I need to buy any more .257" hunting bullets? Nope!

I have always heard the 115 Partitions were excellent. My brother used the 120 Partitions at 3300 from his 257 Wby and had no complaints.

Been thinking about those 115gr "Blue Cyclones" for the 257 Bob.

I've been working towards finding a load for the 250AI with the 110gr "White Lightning" (immediately jumped to mind as I was reading through this thread; glad to see others had the same thought!)

Going to stick with the good ol' 100gr in the 250 Savage whether it be the Partition or Speer Hot Cor, although I would really like to get my hands on some old Winchester Power Points to load too. The rifle likes the old factory ammo.

As for ammo on hand Guy, I really like having a 100 rounds on hand for each rifle at all times...never have to worry about running out due to range and field practice, hunting and having spares. For those I really enjoy shooting, sometimes more is a good thing! I used to put between 500-700 rounds a year through a previous 6.5x55 at the range every year; that Remington 700 Classic was a joy to shoot!

Great bullets for deer antelope and an occasional yote!

Yep the 115 BT is a good bullet but the 115 Partition is a GREAT bullet. It kills WAY beyond what one would think. Only problem is the ballistic coefficient is nowhere near the BT. Inside 300 yards you don't need to worry though. Put either in the vitals of any game and they are history. I have killed a train load of white tail deer with a 25-06 and experimented with MANY different bullets. In all reality it don't matter the bullet if it is between 100 and 120 grs they all will do the job on a deer. My favorite is 117 Sierra Pro Hunter.

Back when I was shooting a 25-06 the Nosler 115 PT got used more than anything. Tried the 115 BT with good results before selling it. Moved on to other calibers but might need to get another one. Dan.

Always amazed at how close the sweet loads come to yours Guy. Here are some of my Blue Cyclones. Run them with 58.2gn Retumbo. I think if it has 06 in the name there are classic loads availavle[emoji16]

I always like the way Ballistic Tips look.
Back when E-Bay had bullets I bought a bunch of older 120 Nosler solid base boat tails that worked well in my 25-06.
The Ballistic Tips make for a prettier cartridge.
