Ever shoot a not so good target you felt good about?

Need to give it a break but fun to shoot the 165 load that's done so well in my M70.

Went to the range today and had it along. Soon as I got out of the truck I knew I had to be an idiot to shoot at 200 yds, but good practice.

Occasionally brief light wind, but mostly steady wind mixed in with sustained heavy gusts. Direct left to right crosswind. I would take varying holds to the left based on how hard I thought it was blowing.

1 shot that went left I knew soon as it went off I was too far left for how hard the wind was at the moment. The other 1 that went left I couldn't of said was left until I looked at the target.

4 shot group just under 2", 5 shot group just under 3". Got home and looked at the computer and it said current conditions 7mph winds with 16 mph gusts. Not a good looking target but would've produced dead on vital hits under crap conditions. Starting to have a lot of confidence in this combo. (y)

I used to spend hundreds of hours, dollars, working up hunting loads trying to cover holes with dimes. The truth is most of us just don’t need it in a hunting rifle.

A 2 MOA rifle fired 30 times at one spot, scope adjusted to the center of this group should be no more than 3” from center hole in any direction at 300 yards. I’ve come to realize my old man killed more animals than most, and half the time checked his scope on a mud clod at 100 yards.

That’s a fine group with a known pull, that’s just fine if you aren’t shooting long range.
 
Thanks Coop, I wouldn't attempt long range under the conditions that were present today. I wouldn't be surprised if it was more than 16mph at times at the range. Felt WINDY.

Still I was happy with it for 200 yds and varying holds for winds that I perceived as sometimes double. This combo has been hanging around 1/2" MOA at 200 yds under conditions that I can hold the same place every time. I intend to test it out stretching it out a little......350 or so.

The best thing you can do for your sanity as a hunter is sight it in and let it be. Check zero as you feel pertinent but otherwise...

Ha! Filmjunkie, this dang shooting is a little bit addicting. Oh well, guess there could be worst habits. I know I don't need it for hunting but it's fun for me to experiment, learn, and practice.

I'm about 3/4 of a mile by the way a crow flies, and maybe 3 miles by road to the local range. I work for myself so even if I just have a 1/2 hr it doesn't take long to stop in, set up and send a couple down range.

Good thing I'm not a gambler that lives next to a casino. :lol:
 
Nice shooting ST, I’d take that anyday.

I like seeing 5 or more shots on paper. Really gives me a great picture of how the load and rifle are doing.

There are much worse habits to have my friend. I was more referring to the state of insanity one can get to by the occasionally larger groups.

Shooting IS fun!

Like you said... that's a deer at 200 yds in lousy conditions. Nothing to complain about there.

Like all else, the only way to get really good at something is to do it. If you really want to drive yerself wild put out wind flags, even in your yard, & just watch them. Watch a benchrest match. Those guys are machines with wind computers built into their non-dominant eye... & patient... until the last 30 seconds of the match sometimes. Be careful, it's a whole new level of crazy.
 
Oh ya! Practice in less than ideal conditions! Turns ya into a serious rifleman!

Reading the wind, the conditions, and compensating for them to still make good hits... That's challenging!

When I can put my first 12 ga slug in a 3 inch bull at 100, and keep the next 2 within a couple inches of the first shot I consider myself zeroed and ready to hunt. Sometimes I don't even bother with the other two...

what are the four fish that should never be eaten

Yup- felt real good. Come to think of it most of my targets are "not so good" but most are still fun!
