I’ve been reloading for a number of years, but have just found the 160gr Partition for my .270. I’m moose hunting in Newfoundland next year and can’t wait to try this load out! Ive found a load that is 0.48” at 100 yards in a 4-shot group:

50.5gr IMR4350
Winchester brass
Federal large rifle primers
3.32” OAL
22” barrel

Any of you have experience with that load on Eastern moose?
Anybody have a similar load with an estimate on FPS at the muzzle?

So glad to have joined this board!

Welcome aboard. Glad to see your post. I don't have experience with that bullet/propellant combination, but I can provide a QL projection that will give you an estimate of what the load may be doing.

Code:
Cartridge : .270 Win. (SAAMI)
Bullet : .277, 160, Nosler PART SSP 16324
Useable Case Capaci: 59.060 grain H2O = 3.835 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.320 inch = 84.33 mm
Barrel Length : 22.0 inch = 558.8 mm
Powder : IMR 4350

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 1.0% of nominal charge.
CAUTION: Figures exceed maximum and minimum recommended loads !

According to this, you might have some room to increase your charge if you were inclined to do so. However, with that level of accuracy, I'd be comfortable using what I had. It will certainly work for an eastern moose. You should be golden. Again, welcome to the forum.

You might have to ask the moose question in the hunting forum vs reloading. I’m sure someone will reply.. if you get no replies, repost it over there. I think most guys follow more than one set of threads.

That’s some fine shooting there. Looks like you found the load you’re rifle likes.

The moose you point it at are in big trouble.

Thanks! I’m lucky to have a very consistent/accurate rifle and to have found a round it loves to shoot. My job is to keep the “human” out of it as much as possible!

Excellent results at the loading bench and the shooting bench!

Good Job!

I've never shot a moose - but I wouldn't hesitate to do so with your rifle/load.

Regards, Guy

That’s great accuracy and a potent load! Handle most everything in NA.... might not be the first choice for large bears but with a calm, accurate shooter it d most likely handle that too.

As Dr Mike mentioned you have some room to work up IF you should incline. I load a stout charge of IMR4831 (54 grs; above current book max so don’t try it without starting low) in my sons 24” Rem 700 and it shoots sub-moa at 2800 FPS with that same 160 Partition. It actually has a decent BC also and is capable of 300-400 yd shots in skilled hands. Good luck with your hunt!

I’d hunt pretty happily with a 270 and the 160 Partitions. I’d probably bump my charge weight a bit to get a touch more zip if accuracy holds out but that bullet will penetrate really deep.

Excellent shooting by the way. I’ve heard nothing but excellent results from animals to targets with the 160’s.

>>> for sure ! energy for your purpose is paramount. I.m having such stellar performance w/ RL26 in my .270 i'd give it a try (y) Good shooting buddy.

Thanks everybody! I bought a chrono and just checked the muzzle velocity yesterday. It’s pretty consistently measuring at 2685fps. Very close to your chart data, Dr Mike!

That isn’t bad and likely to never be a thing. I’m betting you could lean on it a little bit to get up into or near 2800 but if it’s shooting well and you’re enjoying it then I’d leave it alone. I know moose and elk and about everything else have been handled with much less powerful combos.

I have a couple of old boxes of the 277 160 grain Partitions that I will be working up a load for this winter for next fall. I've got H4350, H4831SC and RL23 to work up loads with. If anyone can give me some QL data for RL23 and the 160 Partition I'd appreciate it. I've got about 7 sources of load data so the other powders are pretty well covered, just not Reloader 23.
