270wsm/150gr Deep Curl

Excellent performance. Thanks for posting. I know several of the regular posters are looking at the DC very closely.

Double D, that is great performance. I am liking the Speer Deep Curls more and more. 150's are where it is at in the 270WSM.. That looks like it held up really well. Nice wide mushroom with good retained weight.

How is the accuracy?

Accuracy is bout 3/4" at 100yds in my Rem CDL SF.....might could get a little more speed out of her, but this is where the accuracy node seemed to be, and won't need to go any further than 200yds or so where I will be using this gun.

There is some load data on Speer's site, and I seem to be spot on with my Magpro load (65.0) and what they show.

I have yet to kill with this bullet, but for the price....and seeing how it held up to the jug test, I think Speer did well with this one!

Is that a flat-based design? I'm assuming it's the replacement for the 150gr Hot-Cor? Looks great. I suspect it would do well in my 270Wby, though I'd like to see a jug test at 3100fps, as I'm able to push 150's at 3200fps pretty handily. Great info, though, Double D.

I would try them out of my WSM at 3150.. Should give us a good idea of the bullet pushed a little harder. I bet it'll move some water then!

It is not a boattail....if you look at the 2nd picture you can see that there is a void that goes up into the base...not sure what you would call it....

There is no load data on Speer's site for the 270 Wby mag and the deep curl so proceed carefully

I like that, I wonder what is the difference between this performance and what FOTIS posted???? Different weghts, slightly different construction by caliber? Hmmmmmmmm

Very impressive!...I too like the 150's in my 270WSM..right now i'm running 150gr partitions and norma oryx bullets outta mine, and they shoot real well..gonna run the PT's into some jugs real soon..Lou

SJB358.....here is the load data Speer has on there website

http://www.speer-bullets.com/pdf/270WSM ... taFile.pdf

just under 3k is the fastest they have listed....let me know if you get to 3150 as I might give it a try.

It'll be awhile, but I think 3100 shouldn't be any big trick with the WSM. I would think a 270 running decent would be right on 2950 or better as well. It is hard to mess with my 270WSM as it shoots the 150 BT, PT's and PTG's really well.. Might have to look at the 7mm's or 30 cals for more experimenting.

Bill, where was the picture Fotis posted on the DC's?

DrMike....

can you run the QL for the 150dc and a 270wbymag....I also have a MarkV that I might dust off and see how hard it can push a 150DC

thanks

Looking at QL, there doesn't seem to be more than maybe 100FPS difference between the WSM and WBY to be honest. I imagine the 26" makes about 50FPS on the WSM in a 24" as well. I would mess with the 150's, but I am doing pretty good as it is, so I am not going to push my luck too far!

Looking forward to hearing how Jake makes out with his new 270WBY

The 270WSM is nipping at the heel of the 270 Wby. In the field, either will be a capable round for the game intended.

I can tell you, speaking strictly from my personal, anecdotal experience, that in all five Weatherby chambered rifles I've loaded for, QL data is always a bit understated. I speculate QL has issues with computing the effect of the freebore in Weatherby cartridges, but I've also been told it is adjustable for that issue. I've never worked with QL, only had it run for me by a few friends, so I can't speak to the utility of adjusting the program. What I can tell you is the charges listed have yet to produce anything remotely close to the velocities listed in all five rifles. The rifles are my 270'bee, and four 300'bees belonging to myself and friends.

Comparing QL simulations to known, current, published data for the 270Wby and 150gr bullets provides additional evidence, as the 67.8gr charge of IMR7828 is anywhere from 2.2-6+gr below the current published charges. Again, that's current data, from the latest iterations from Nosler, Hodgdon, Barnes, and others. I have an older Speer manual that shows much higher charges of IMR7828 with a 150gr, but I'm not about to push that load in my rifle, knowing how my rifle reacts to 7828 with lower charges. I did find it interesting that I may have just now struck upon the reason that Hornady's data is so dismal in their latest manual. It's a near dead match for the QL data. Coupling that with the knowledge that several of the bullet and powder companies do not even have test barrels in 270Wby (by their admission when I've called for tech support), it's not easy to imagine that Hornady ran some simulations and published that data with a few tweaks to ensure safety.

With a 26" barrel it's pretty easy to stroke the 270Wby out to 3200fps with 150gr bullets, with any of several powders I've tried, using current published data. I have gotten no pressure signs from any of those loads, either. I imagine the 'bee will still, to Scotty's and Dr. Mike's point, enjoy a slight advantage over the 270WSM, just based on about 5gr of nominal case capacity advantage. At the same pressures, that 5gr of capacity is going to equate to about 50-100fps depending on the powder/load. Game won't notice it. Of course, if you have a 270WSM, you have to be alright with being in second place. A win by a nose is still a win, guy!
