Took some 2.5 gal chem jugs to the range with me today. I wanted to catch a 140 AB out of the 270 Weatherby doing 3250, and a 130 PT out of a 270 Win, doing around 2950. The jugs were set up so that I was shooting into the narrow side of them. First up was the 270 Weatherby and the 140 AB.

I was pretty happy with how things went. The bullet penetrated two jugs, bounced off the third and was laying on the ground right next to the third jug. It weighed in at 83 gr., just a hair under 60%.

My friend was kind of interested in what was happening and wanted to see how her 270 Win shooting some 130 PT would do. I lined the jugs up and let one fly. I had put a piece of wood up behind the last two jugs, just in case the little 130 PT out of the Little 270 winchester went through both jugs. It turns out, it was a good thing I did! I picked that little 130 PT out of the wood behind the last jug. I didn't get a chance to weight it, as my friend wanted to keep her bullet. But it sure looked really good. It has kind of got me thinking about making the sewitch in my 270 Weatherby to a 150 Pt.

Thanks Fotis. I'm getting all worked up about a 150 PT doing 3200 out of it. Would be a great all around load for Oregon. Deer, elk, black bears, and flat enough for speed goats (if I ever draw a tag!). Might have to see what some super slow powders do with it. Maybe Retumbo, H1000, or RL-33. Who knows.

A 130 ET might not be to shabby either!

So many choices :?

Those bullets look as if they performed more than adequately. Good catch, Jake.

Jake,

Nicely done. Those are good results.
The Nosler AB and PT are pretty predictable as to how they will work and the recovered bullets always look the same.

The 150 gr PT would be a great all around load in the 270 Wby, I would even hunt moose and be confident using them.

Jake, the 150 PT in the 270 Weatherby would be the choice for me buddy. 3200 or so, and alot of swat. I love the AB's, but when you can push them big 150's hard like that, they are really impressive!

That is pretty impressive performance for the 130 PT in the .270 Win. I have been killing deer with boring predictability with that bullet for almost 50 years. I have only recovered one bullet out of all those deer! All the rest of the PT's were still flying last time I saw them!

Great catches! I believe those two bullets are all you need from a 270 Win to handle anything you should be handling with a 270Win. I think the 160gr Partition would make a fine heavy game bullet out of your 270 Wthby. Somewhere around 3100fps, they would get the job done. The 150gr Hornady Interbond has a high BC and would make your rifle sing if you're looking for long range performance.

Great performance from both. I am partial to the IMR 7828 in the Weatherby. I have found it very consistant. The bee doesn't care if it is 130's 140's or 150's. The intended target never knows the difference, and I hardly ever find a bullet. 130 partitions whistle through elk. 150's pass through moose just fine.

7828 ssc is what I'm using with the 140 AB in the 270 Weatherby. I'm liking it, A LOT!

Have you noticed a difference between 7828 and 7828 SSC in the way your gun shoots?

Rommel, I have used both in the 7mm Rem Mag and in the .340 Weatherby and I get very high velocity and very good accuracy. I use the same loads for both SSC and not permutations without being able to see any difference.
